I have a fairly new computer that had a sudden slow down after a virus got downloaded. I have gone through the virus forum and the computer seems clear of the virus but is still so slow it's almost unuseable. I was hoping someone could help me to see if there is something specific I could fix before I have to wipe it and start over. Thanks

Please download MiniToolBox, and save it to your desktop and run it, and checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Start the PC up (best done as administrator), once the desktop is up, right click on the task bar and then select task manger, click on the process tab, in the bottom left of the window click on the button that says "show Processes for all users" then click on the "CPU" header to set it in descending order (highest percentage processor useage at the top) so you can see if anything is eating up all the processor. If there is a file\program using 50%+ then make a note of the file\program name and report back here.

I think a good cleanup for entire clutter, i.e. the cache, temp files, prefetch data and all other setting may work good. And yeah just don't forget to install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and run a full scan in that. It would hardly take an hours time and would detect all possible threats. Once the scan is completed remove if anything bad is detected and restart the computer. Now it would work great, I guess. Repost here with derived results.

Slowness, freezing and performance issues as you describe are not uncommon, especially with older computers. Please refer to some of the suggestions in this guide: Slow Computer/Browser? Check here first; it may not be malware

With that said, it wouldn't hurt to follow cryptodan's instructions to gather some more information.

It's fairly new and without much clutter. I will follow cryptodan's instructions and then double check on the other suggestions and report back. Thanks!

If its new...it may have software that is not needed.

To remove common trial and promotional software, Toolbars and junk programs often installed on a new computer by OEMs, use PC De-crapifier which provides a wizard style interface with step by step instructions.

For other programs you don't recognize or know whether they are worthwhile to keep or be removed, use Should I Remove It?.

Bleeping Computer's Uninstall Programs Database is a place where you can conduct a search of programs.
