msiexec continues to execute with each startup looking for some file (does not inform  what file), and displays annoying popups and at times overlays current window.  In addition, when I attempt to install software, it tells me that windows installer is already running and it must finish prior to the requested install.

I modified the configuration to no execute windows installer on startup but then if I attempt to do a software installation, it tells me the service is not running.

I re-registered wsiexec.exe and also removed it and downloaded a new copy and installed it.

Still same problem

Any ideas??

Just found out that after a reinstallation of XP, a mass installation of windows updates was interrupted.  On the next startup automatic update wanted to install 115 updates (on the previous startup after reinstall there were 123 updates), and this problem began.

Since you haven't posted the exact error message, I'm just guessing.

See http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/125758/installer-constantly-trying-to-install-product-status/

Don't know what the DLL does but downloading it and extracting in c:\WINDOWS\System32 seems to have solved the problem.

The error messages I got were the same as in the post you directed me to.

Thanks much for the help!!!
