Hello newbie here;  Thanks for allowing me to join.  I have 2 desktop computers, the old one is Windows XP (will change to  Linux Mint ) and gets 15 mbps when  I run a speed test at ookla's  speedtest.net but the new Windows 8.1  only gets 9.58 mbps. I mainly use the Firefox browser and it has been crashing lately. My security scans show no issues.  I read a recent post here about  ' sluggish pc'  and  a host asked for a  mini toolbox logfile and I decided to post one too in  hopes of finding out if there are any issues that need resolution.

Who is your current ISP?

Please perform the following, so that we can get the exact specs of your computer. This will better assist us in helping you more.

Publish a Snapshot using Speccy

The below is for those who cannot get online

Speedtests cannot be used to truly judge your true speed from your connection, through your ISP's network, then onto the outside world.  They can vary across Operating Systems, Browsers, Network adapters, how much traffic is hitting the network that the server that you are using to test your speed with.

If the test with Windows was with a Wireless adapter, and Linux through a wired adapter, right there, that can show yes there is going to be a big variance.  If both were through wireless, usually it is Linux that is going to show slower speed throughput with speedtests, then Windows.

Really I would not worry, unless you start seeing high ping times in a Ping or Traceroute to a particular server.  Then you need to be contacting your ISP and working with them on that issue.

1+1=11, I would not worry much about the results from the difference.  This is typical, when dealing with today's Internet.

You have 2 desktop computers. Does Firefox crash on both of them?

--- Is the ISP modem wired or wireless?

Is the XP computer working wired or wireless with your ISP modem?

Is the Windows 8.1 computer working wired or wireless with your ISP modem?

--- And is it in another room?

Please download the following: Norton Removal Tool and reactivate Windows Defender and see if you experience slow net speeds.

You are getting half of what you pay for, so yes you should be concerned.

See this http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_crashes for diagnosing Firefox crashing.  Also are you using FF in Metro, or on the Desktop?  Firefox has had long standing issues of crashing for no known reason, even before Windows 8.x came out.  It started getting worse, when they went with the 20.x versions.

Update:  I removed Norton and Firefox with no change in net speed.  Finally decided to go into internet options and reset to default settings and now have the 15mbps I'm  paying for.   I won't put Norton or Firefox back on as they may have changed the settings ?  I just hope the Windows Defender is safe to  use for security by itself ?   Thanks for all the replies they were very helpful.

Thank you for letting us know your solution

I'd like to recommend that you follow up on having only Windows Defender for your computers security

I'd like to also bring in the fact that Microsoft ends support for XP on Apr 8 this year

Firefox, would not cause this issue.

Firefox can cause that issue, including an extension loaded with it.  I stopped using FF, because it was such a memory hog, along with being slow when connecting to the Internet.  I only use Chrome now, and have never had the problems that FF gave all the time.  When they got to the 20.x version, things started to go South with FF.

I completely beg to differ.  I have been using Firefox off and on since version 2, and never had a reduction in speed regardless of what browser I used.  I always got what my ISP promised me.  If I didn't I would call them up and complain.  Its the one reason I do not recommend using any extensions or add-ons.

I get 85Megabits a second on downloads from various sites using IE, Firefox, and Chrome.  I have never seen one browser slow down and another doesn't. It is all dependent upon your TCP Settings under Windows that dictates your speed.

So if Firefox and IE present or Chrome in this case presents you various speeds then its time to consult your ISP or remove add-ons or scan for malware.
