I played all of these at night with the lights off on the biggest screen I had.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl

FEAR

Theif (I do not remember which one, it is now an older game).

I find the biggest thing with scary games is getting immersed in them, use headphones that are noise canceling and turn out the lights, play on a big screen or sit close.

Personally, I found the Blair Witch Project series to be pretty surprising. They're dated games (early 2000s) but there were a few shocking moments in the gameplay.

DayZ and Nether are very fun. Survival horror. They're available on Steam.

Try other stalker games. They are fun too.
If you are looking for horror try F.E.A.R. It's a killer game.
I heard 7 days to die is a also good game.
