What is the model that you have?  Have you checked the audio settings in Control Panel > Sounds for the Speaker.  Troubleshooting for Windows is pretty much a given that it will not fix anything.  I really do not know why MS even implemented it, due to it is more for show, then actually resolving any issues.

I would try uninstalling the device in Device manager, then when you reboot, load the HP drivers for that device.  If it is a Realtek HD sound chipset, you can download the drivers at http://www.realtek.com.tw/DOWNLOADS/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

If it is a different chipset, use HP's drivers for that model, from the hp support downloads.
