I've tried many things, including scanning for malware, doing a sfc scan, reinstalling windows (four times), manually installing windows service pack 1; using microsoft's FixIt tool; trying to activate Defender + MS Security essentials; restarting the services from services.msc; checking my RAM for errors with windows diagnostic... im on my last wits :** ( Windows Update can't run becasue the services aren't running Windows Defender gives the following error: "service has stopped" and when you click "start now", it times out and gives another error. i read online that defender is needed to start, for update to work, that's why i tried this. When I tried to install Service Pack 1, it gave me "catastrophic error" 0x8000FFFFF, which seems to mean I'm in deep bleep, judging from a quick search result As mentioned in my topic title, I've done a SMART scan and my HD is a-okay. This is my second, clean reinstall of Windows 7. I've scanned for malware and viruses with several scanners -- clean.

Open the Search and Indexing troubleshooter by clicking the Start button 4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33_818, and then clicking Control Panel.

In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Click View all, and then click Search and Indexing.

Depending on the severity of the problem, the Search and Indexing troubleshooter might need to restart the Windows Search service.
