Hello, everyone

If I could just briefly explain my problem.  Early today I received a text message to my phone with my e-mail address in the subject line and a strange link in the body of the text.  Several friends alerted me that they got e-mails/texts from me with a strange link in the body of the e-mail or text.  I checked my e-mail sent box and found three e-mails that I did not compose or send, sent to about 15-20 people in my e-mail address book.

I changed my password to my e-mail account and so far have not been informed of any more of these spam e-mails.

I was/am unsure if my computer was compromised or infected in any way.

I then ran Microsoft Security Essentials, which found no threats, followed by Avast, which also found no threats.

I download a new version of MBAM and ran a full scan.  It found 52 problems.  I am posting the logs below.

My main question is whether my computer is safe to be using as well as if I am still infected and what to do next.  Hopefully the logs below help in some way.  Thanks so much for reading my post.

Hope to be speaking to some of you soon.

Hi

Welcome!

Please download and use the following tools (in the order listed) which will search for and remove many potentially unwanted programs (PUPs), adware, toolbars, browser hijackers, extensions, add-ons and other junkware as well as related registry entries (values, keys) and remnants.

RKill created by Grinler (aka Lawrence Abrams), the site owner of BleepingComputer.
AdwCleaner created by Xplode.
Junkware Removal Tool created by thisisu.

1. Double-click on RKill to launch the tool. A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.

Important: Do not reboot your computer until you complete the next step.

2. Double-click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.

  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for review.
  • After reviewing the log, click on the Clean button.
  • Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
  • Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process.
  • After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[S0].txt) will open automatically.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.

-- Note: The contents of the AdwCleaner log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you recognize and know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, return to AdwCleaner before cleaning...all detected items will be listed (and checked) in each tab. Click on each one and uncheck any items you want to keep (except you cannot uncheck Chrome and Firefox preferences lines).

Close all open programs and shut down any protection/security software to avoid potential conflicts.

3. Double-click on JRT.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.

  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log file named JRT.txt will automatically open and be saved to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of JRT.txt in your next reply.

4. As a final step, rescan again with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Dasos,

Thanks so much for the quick reply.   I am going through the tasks that you asked me to.  It is taking a little longer than I had thought.  I just wanted to update you.  I will post the results as soon as I can.  Thanks again, and talk to you soon!

Hi

You’re Welcome!

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed on your
computer.
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic Real-Time protection
switched on then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them
can cause other anti virus products to cause false alarms.
It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files
which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection.
In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
False Alarms When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus
when it actually doesn't.
System Performance Problems Your system may lock up due to both
products attempting
to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please remove either MSE or AVAST.

Please update and rescan again with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan

  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the esetonlinebtn.png button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the esetsmartinstaller_enu.png
      icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications

  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.

Dasos,

Thanks again.  I'm a little confused.  I downloaded Avast when I first encountered this problem.  It found nothing, so I uninstalled it.  As far as I know it is no longer installed. So I think I just have Microsoft Security Essentials installed.  Also, when I run  MBAM should I turn off the real time protection of MSE?  I apologize if these questions are rudimentary.  Thanks again!

That’s ok than!

Also, when I run  MBAM should I turn off the real time protection of MSE?

No the work fine together, only when you scan with ESET.

Hi

Looks good!

Just one more quick check

Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.

Save it to your Desktop.

Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.

A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

How is your comp running now?

Dasos,

Here is the requested log. Overall the computer seems to be running fine.  I mentioned the  e-mails that I found in my sent box that I never composed or sent in my original post.  I am confused if the problems we have found are connected to that or are separate.  Thanks again.  Talk to you soon.

Hi
Yes probably from there!

All you need is java update

and Adobe Reader new Version XI (11.0.06)
http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 7 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • From the list, select your OS and Platform (32-bit or 64-bit). 64-bit OS users, should read: Which Java download should I choose for my 64-bit Windows operating system?
  • If a download for an Offline Installation is available, it is recommended to choose that and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to StartBtn.gif > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7/8 and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-7u51-windows-i586.exe (or jre-7u51-windows-x64.exe for 64-bit) to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows 7/8 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered any unwanted software or toolbars during installation, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it. The McAfee Security Scan Plus may be installed unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.
-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.
And arm your comp!!

Look here how!!

Dasos,

I installed Java update as well as adobe reader.  When I installed adobe reader it also installed Mcafee security scan plus and created a desk top icon.  Is that normal or should I be getting rid of the macafee.  Thanks again.  Talk to you soon.

Dasos,

No problem.  If I could just ask you one more question.  We installed Adware Cleaner, Rkill, Junkware Removal Tool, Eset, and Security Check.  Should I uninstall those or leave them ?  Thanks so much for all of your help.
