Hey BleepingComputer team,

I fear that I may have multiple infections and I have tried many different avenues to remove them, but I'm not sure what I'm left with.

I am running Windows 8 (haven't updated to 8.1), 64-bit.

I can remember realizing that there was a problem when both Chrome and IE were redirecting to some fake Yahoo site.  Having torrented some things lately, I wasn't terribly surprised.  AdAware and CCleaner were ineffective at removing the problem.  Upon some Google searching, I was led to a folder called Spigot which was hiding somewhere in Program Files x86 or something like that.  I think I remember right clicking it and there being an unfamiliar "Uninstall" option, and, in my naivety, I clicked it.  I then deleted and re-installed Chrome, and that seemed to have fixed the problem as Chrome was no longer redirecting.  However, upon later investigation, I realized that IE was still redirecting to that fake Yahoo page.  I am unable to delete and reinstall IE from the Add/Remove programs window for whatever reason, so that wasn't an option.

Next, I came to this site.  I followed many of the instructions posted for another person with a Yahoo redirect virus (the link to which of course I can't find), hoping that I wouldn't have to create a new topic for you guys to have to sort through.  I ran everything you guys suggested in the order that you suggested it, without realizing that I shouldn't have run some of these things without supervision (sorry!).  I ran DDS, AdwCleaner, Junkware Removal Tool, ComboFix, HijackThis, MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, RKill, TDSS Killer, and Farbar Recovery Scan Tool - I think in that order.  I have logs from everything sorted by date modified if you'd like any of them.

Somewhere in there, I followed the instructions for removal from this wikihow page.  I am no longer seeing the MySearchDial home page or the Yahoo redirect, but I'm afraid that they are just hiding somewhere unresolved.  Also, after all of that, I ran DDS another time and I'm still seeing "Zip Extractor Packages" in the "attach" log.

If it would help, I have some screenshots of the MySearchDial home page, the fake Yahoo site that it redirects to, and the Zip Extractor Packages program in the Add/Remove programs window,  but I don't have one of Spigot in Program Files since it disappeared once I selected "Uninstall."

At this point, I need to know what is still lingering, if anything, and how in the world to dig it out.

Thanks for your help and your patience,
salvadordahlia

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from the following link if you no longer have it available and save it to your destop.

    DDS.com Download Link
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control can be found HERE.

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===

The DDS tool is not quite ready for Windows 8.1. Please use this tool.

Download correct tool for your operating system.
Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (64 bit)
Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (32 bit)
and save it to a folder on your computer's Desktop.
Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.
