Hello all

Recently looked in Windows Services and found "@(BrandName)" at the top of the list. It cant be disabled and it's not started either. Can anyone please tell me what this is and if it is genuine or some sort of malware? Thanks.

I've run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware full scan and also SUPERAntiSpyware full scan and both shows the system is clear of malware.

From a bit of searching, it seems that service is part of Windows Defender. You can check to see if it is active as it should be unless you have installed

a 3rd party antivirus.

To open Windows Defender
  1. Open Windows Defender by clicking the Start button 4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33_818. In the search box, type Defender, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Defender.

  2. Click Tools, and then click Options.

  3. Click Administrator, select or clear the Use this program check box, and then click Save. 18abb370-ac1e-4b6b-b663-e028a75bf05b_48. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

"There you go.  :thumbup2:"

Thanks dc3. Didn't realise Win Defender was @(BrandName) on the Services list. Microsoft must have sneaked it either during Windows 8 or 8.1 upgrade. Not much on the 'net about it yet, though my searches found people asking about $(BrandName) which must be a US name for it (I'm UK based).

Beeping Computer is a great resource. Just used the forums to clear my aunt's PC of Conduit and some other nasty deeply embedded toolbars/search. Looks like more and more "free" software providers are resorting to this unpleasant revenue stream. I'm contributing to all clean free resource/software I use because of this to keep them clean.

Please everybody, contribute to resources you like eg. Bleeping, Wikipedia, good software (OSS or otherwise). Everybody has bills to pay!<sermon over>.

Thanks again dc3 and all helpers on BC. [Solved]
