Hi all.

I need help in getting rid of a W32/Trojan.BEF virus which my F-Prot detects constantly. I upgraded my Windows 2000 to Windows XP but my PC got infected before I had managed to install all security updates. My F-Prot detects infected .EXE files in C:\WINNT\system32, starting with "eraseme". I tried to delete them but they come back. For example, I've had some named eraseme_28335.exe, eraseme_35350.exe, etc.

I also have another issue, not sure if related but will post it here in case it is: Windows Update keeps pestering me about installing a security update named KB835732. I install it and 5 mins later the Windows Update asks me to install it again. It seems that the operating system does not recognize that this update has been installed, or something (maybe this virus) prevents its proper installation.

I have completed all preparation steps which did not help since F-Prot still detects the virus in newly recreated "eraseme*" files. McAfee AVERT Stinger detected another file in C:\WINNT\system32 named "i" which I overwrote with Notepad thinking it may be the source file, but it seems there must have been other infections.

Please, advise on how to solve these issues. I'm posting my HijackThis log below.

Thanks much in advance!

Hello vadamov,

Remember that your system is extremely vulnerable without the necessary security patches/updates, so malware can get installed automatically while surfing without any problems.
Please visit http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...p1/network.mspx and update to Service Pack 1. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection.

When you get this done, please post a new HijackThis log to make sure your machine is clean. It's not safe to update to SP2 unless your machine is clean.

Thanks,
tea

Hi tea,

I thought I have installed all updates but apparently not... Anyway, I went and installed the SP1a, and I think this time it allowed me to finalize the install of the security update KB835732 which was causing problems before. But unfortunately this did not remove the virus. The "eraseme" files multiplied again. Here is my new HijackThis log. Thanks much for your assistance!

Hello again,

I thought that might help with the update problem. Great! :flowers:

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido Anti-Malware:
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you might get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main Ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes, the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
  • Click on Scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
  • Close Ewido
Post the log from Ewido along with a new HijackThis log in your reply. How is your computer running?

Thanks,
tea

Hi tea,
my PC is running well, I think, but I won't rest until I get rid of this crappy virus  I'm not installing any Windows Updates anymore before we get rid of it - I believe you mentioned that SP2 should be installed after we erase it. I ran Ewido, and I'm posting both logs below. Thanks much for your time!

Hello again,

Is any other scanner detecting this? Your log is clean, and I'm starting to suspect a false positive from F-Prot.
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

Hi tea,

I don't think it was false alarm. I personally deleted multiple times the "eraseme_*.exe" files and each time they recreated with a different 5-digit number in the name where the * is. There was also a file called "i" (with no extension) in C:/WINNT/system 32 which also was infected and recreated after I deleted it.

After your last post I manually deleted two programs and their associated processes in Explorer and in HijackThis: IncrediMail and ButterflyOasis screensaver by Gain. I think one of these two was speading the virus since so far it has not recreated infected files. I'll wait a bit longer before I make a conclusion. Could you recommend a good firewall program?

I'm posting a new HijackThis log FYI. Thanks much!

Hello,

Yes, Gain would sure do it. If you want to give it a day or so to make sure, I'll leave this thread open, and in the meantime you can get your firewall. :flowers:

MOST IMPORTANT!
Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. Your current versions are outdated. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

You should definitely maintain a firewall. Some good free firewalls are ZoneAlarm, or Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

IE/Spyad:
It places over 5000 malicious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.
IE/Spyad

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!
