Just got wifi at my new place and no problems with my computer. My GF's laptop has the problems connecting. She gets wifi only if I set for an Open network or ethernet. I think the problem is with Vista. So does my IP's tech support, but they were clueless about solving the problem...namely no wifi with WPA SK.

Her laptop is Acer Aspire 4315 2535 with Vista.

I poked around on the internet and I think this MS Support update will solve the problem? But, not sure.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233/en-us

Not sure if I need to go to Acer support for any updates?

Good advice appreciated, I don't like keeping my wifi Open.  Help appreciated, Jack

It seems to be a common problem with this computer. In Device manager what chip is shown for the wireless adapter? Right Click the wireless adapter, select properties and in the dropdown box under the details tab select hardware ID and copy in your next post. I believe an updated driver will work.

Edit: Check this link.

Hi John--  I should note she just got this laptop. Followed your post. Results:

Atheros AR5007

Driver Date: 4/23/07

Version: 7.2.208

Properties has an "update" tab.

I am also guessing this whole laptop needs updates.  Waiting....for orders..............

I poked around and saw Windows Vista Home Premium hasn't been updated. After a half hour nothing but problems. Had to run the Fix-It Tool and that fixed some things but not the install updates.

I think it's esentially a 2007 laptop. Last Update in hisory is from last August?

Is the OS 32 bit or 64bit?

32 Bit. Windows Upate not working. Could Update Malwarebytes. Probably should Update at Acer. Not sure where to begin updaing. Windows is Updated to 8/13 plus 1 security Update today. Take forever on Windows--over a half hour and no results and 1 little install?

Where should I begin?

Not sure why Windows update is not working. Lets see if this driver will give you WPA. That I believe should be the priority as WEP can be hacked in minutes now.

I have had good luck with this site but others have had trouble. You can download the latest 32/64 bit driver for the AR5007. It will be the 9.1.0.328 version. When you select the download button, it may take a little while before the download starts. Unzip to a folder on the desktop of an admin account. The 64bit drivers have an x on the end of the file name. You can delete these if your Vista is 32bit

netathvx.inf
athrx.sys
athrextx.cat
athrx.pdb

Manually install the driver as follows.

  1.     In Device Manager, locate your wireless adapter
  2.     Right-click>Properties>Update Driver Software under the driver tab.
  3.     Click Browse my computer for driver software, click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on  my computer, and then click Have  Disk.
  4.     In the Install From Disk dialog box, click Browse, locate the .inf file (netathv.inf ) then click  Open.
  5.     Follow the steps in the Update Driver Software DeviceName dialog box to update the driver.

Edit: In step 4 I corrected the inf file name.

OK. Delete drivers with an X

These I delete too:  ? Or keep?  Or download these 4 ?

netathvx.inf
athrx.sys
athrextx.cat
athrx.pdb

I only see the option to download the 32 or 64 bit drivers?

Yes, definitely download from the Qualcom site. I did not know they had all the Atheros drivers. But I remember that Qualcom did buy out Atheros. Thanks for the link.

Edit: Are open to doing a factory reset if you can take all the important data off the computer as it will take the computer back to the date of purchase. The computer may have a factory restore partition.

Edit: Wait, I thought that was an official Qualcom site. The option to download 32bit or 64bit is the inf file. Let me download the driver and I will fix it so you have the 32bit files and I will post a dropbox link.

Okay, I downloaded the AR5007 driver and took out the 64bit files and uploaded to Dropbox. Unzip it to the desktop in an admin account and do the steps in post#8.

Cool John that should work. I'll try and do it tomorrow. I hope it does   Where should I post about my Windows Vista Update problem?

She got this laptop from a friend who upgraded and the last W Update was in August, except for the 1 tiny one that worked today--I'm sure there are more updates. They just won't list or install?

I would start a new thread in the vista forum regarding the update problem. I would not do anything like banking on the computer with a wep connection.
