Mod Edit:  Created topic, split from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/519349/replacing-pc/ - Hamluis.

I have been thinking about upgrading to a new PC myself. I was wondering if maybe a program like Acronis could be used to copy programs and files from an XP machine to Windows 8 or 8.1? The new computer will have to communicate with an Outdoor Payment Terminal, so it will probably be a custom build. I used it to upgrade the hard drive on my laptop and it work flawlessly. Other than that I have no experience with Acronis. If it would work, it could be a wonderful solution for a lot of XP users like LOVEMYPC and myself.

You really should be in your own thread, but okay. Acronis True Image creates a snapshot of your drive and restores it to the same or a different system. The snapshot includes the OS, so what you're suggesting is not possible.

I have since checked the Acronis Web Site and have learned my idea won't work. You can not transfer programs between operating systems. They must be reinstalled for each system.

Yeah, I thought we already established that.
