I was doing a little bit of cleaning up on my computer and decided to uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes. I then went ahead and tried to reinstall MSE but could not. I used a removal tool to successfully remove the remnants of Malwarebytes, but could not do the same for MSE. The removal program told me that it could not end the MSE process (note that I did run the program in Administrator mode in Vista.) I opened up task manager and found that the MSE process (MsMpEng.exe) was still there. Ending the process does nothing, as it just reappears. Microsoft Security Essentials is not appearning on my toolbar or installed programs list. It also doesn't appear on the program list on Revo Uninstaller. Anyone know what I can do to get MSE back on my computer?

Typically, Microsoft Security Essentials can be removed by going to Control Panel - Programs and running the uninstall there.

However, there are times when this won't work.

Official Solution:
Microsoft has published a knowledgebase article for how to manually remove Microsoft Security Essentials:

Further specific Vista instructions -

Updated Nov 12, 2013 - NOTE: If you are attempting to remove MSE
If you are using Vista or Windows 7

You would then reinstall from Install M.S.E.

Thank You -
