About a month ago my hard drive crashed and i had to get a new one. I already had Windows backup media saved on a flash drive so i just installed new hard drive and re-installed Windows. Since then my internet speeds have been extremely slow. I'm paying for a 30 down and 5 up connection. After the new hard drive, i have been getting speeds of about 9-12 Mbps/down wirelessly, and about 24-28 Mbps wired. I had my ISP send a tech out and check it for me and they ran some tests and said there is nothing wrong with the connection or anything. They hooked up their computer up to my Arris modem/router and they were hitting speeds of about 33 Mbps wired and 27-30 Mbps wirelessly. Another thing is that the ping they were getting was about 15-20 and i have always gotten about a 40 ping, even though we were connected to the same server. I have been working non stop for weeks now trying to figure out why my speeds have dropped drastically since installing the new hard drive. Is there something you have to set up when installing a new hard drive?? I have re-installed Windows on my old hard drive before with no issues after completing the install. Please help...this is extremely annoying.

This laptop is a low end laptop. The latency is not that bad.

Yahoo is always the pits in response times of pings with the pings sometimes in the 1000+ ms range! ITS SAD!!!.

Also depending on time of day you will get different ping results as well as if anyone else is doing anything else on the shared network it will affect performance. You want to perform all pings for the best results around midnight or early AM before everyone wakes up and adds network conjestion.

I made a program a few years ago that sampled the connection to www.google.com over a 24 hour period which created a CSV file which I could import to excel and graph my service with my ISP and my ISP's conjestion for times of day. Did this for a week and the data showed a pattern of my minimum response time when pinging www.google.com going from around 30ms or less between 11:45pm and 4:45am, and then it showed the same graphed pattern in the data of the minimum response times climbing to greater than 60ms. * During these conjestion loggings I avoided network traffic to avoid skewing the data, so no streaming movies or downloads of free to play games etc.

*Also, google has many points of presence on the web, so if you ping and write down the IP, and then ping again you can eventually find all the ones that are linked in the DNS that point to google. Last I checked I came up with about 13 IP addresses that resolved to google that were found this way. So I also looked to see if any of them were higher traffic paths by running 13 copies of this delayed 1 ping per minute logger and there were a few that were higher latency, but looking back at my data, the IP address that I used was not one of the conjested paths to google.

Do you have another computer to ping from to see if its just this computer having a latency issue or if its your home network?

In regards to swapping a hard drive and then wifi performance dropped, I have seen people bump the wireless antenna connection before when they open a laptop and the antenna is either disconnected or not seated into the button connection to the B/G/N wireless adapter, so you can check to make sure the antenna is plugged in all the way.

It's just this computer. Plus when i had my isp send a tech over to check it out, they hooked their laptop up to my internet and were hitting speeds of 32Mbps+ and their laptops were cheeper than mine. I'm paying for 30 down and 5 up and i get about 18 down and 5 up since i switched my hdd...I'll check the antenna tomorrow and see if there is anything wrong with that and post tomorrow what i find

What site are you using to check your speeds.  Wifi will always come out slower then wired Ethernet.  Sometimes you get lucky and get a speedtest that shows the real speed.

You could try and tune QOS with The Windows Club TweakUI for Windows 7 to 0.  Also could try a ipconfig /flushdns & netsh winsock reset catalog in the Command window, and see if that fixes things.

What is the manufacturer and model of your router with wifi or wireless access point that you are using?

I'm using Xfinity Speed Test, Speedtest.net, and the Speed Test on the Time Warner site. All give me about the same results. I know that wireless is slightly slower than wired, but i don't understand why it would drop so much just from changing hard drives. Before changing hard drives, i was getting wireless speeds between 28-30 Mbps, now with the new hard drive it's anywere between 10-18 Mbps. The router is an Arris DG860

I just ran those things you suggested in the CMD and my speeds jumped back up to where they should be. Thanks for the hlep. Is this something that i need to do on a regular basis? Or was it just a little glitch?

I run ipconfig /flushdns and netsh winsock reset catalog, about every month to month and a half.  Especially since I had issues myself with ATT screwing with their DNS servers, which caused spikes in hops.

Ok good to know....i think it also had something to do with an update that i did for my wireless card. Yesterday after i did what you said, my internet was working perfect. Then i noticed there was an update available for my wireless card, so i updated it, then my speeds dropped down to about 15 Mbps, so i rolled back the driver, and now speeds are back up again. Thanks for all the help though. This has been pissing me off for about 2 months now and it feels great to finally have it fixed.

That could be.  You can try and reinstall the RaLink Drivers from http://www.mediatek.com/_en/07_downloads/01-1_windowsDetail.php?sn=5044 Mediatek bought out RaLink, so that link is fine.  I have found that anytime I let Windows download updated drivers for anything on my laptop, things go south.  I only use the drivers directly from the chipset manufacturer's website on my machines that I maintain.
