I have a Dell XPS8300 desktop computer that is running Windows 7 Home Premium, and I use Firefox as my browser. Recently, I have contracted a virus somehow that I cannot get rid of no matter what I try....

I have tried uninstalling, and reinstalling tFirefox, system restore, and even went so far as to completely reinstall the operating system, but it remains, and makes surfing the internet near impossible.

I have attached screenshots of the various attempts to get me to update my software, all of which are already at the latest version....

These pop ups seems to happen when I visit almost any webpage, and click the screen with my mouse, and they are maddening.

As you can see, I am getting relentless instructions to update my browser, but it is the latest version.

I am also getting constantly informed that I need to update to the latest version of Java, but that has also been done, and I even got one of those messages on the screen thanking me for updating Java.

As I said, I have tried everything I could think of to get this out of my system, but it seems to have embedded itself into Windows permanently, as if I am never allowed to go online anymore....

Can someone PLEASE help me get this out of my computer, so that I can surf the web again??

I will be eternally grateful, and thanks in advance!!

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.

I am curious, I have been running this Security Check test for some time now, and it seems to be stuck on Performing System Health Check and not moving past this stage....

Is this normal, and it just takes a LOOOONG time to run this scan, or should I cancel it and start over??

Nevermind it finished, and I am moving on to the next now!! :bananas:

Hey again,
I completed all of the scans, and am posting results here now, (man that rootkit Malwarebytes thing took forever) but I have also noticed that whatever is happening has a tendency to completely take over web pages, and makes them unusable....
An example is that I am no longer able to access my Email.
I can open the login page, and even log in, but it says Loading forever, and never completes, so I cannot open my Inbox to view received Emails, it will also make the Log Out button do nothing, so I have to use Task Manager to close the page??
As well, the top of any page that does this drops down, and makes room for what I am assuming is supposed to be some form of add, but the add does not render....
Here are the logs you wanted me to post:

ESET

The ESET did not seem to find anything to fix, so the first couple of scans must have knowcked out the problem....

____________________________________________________________________________________________

For the record, I think I may have figured this out myself somewhat, and that it may very well have been because of that Freecorder 8 YouTube Downloader add-on I installed....
It seems that this may have been successfully removed by these applications you had me run, so I will cross my fingers, and hope for the best. :hello:

*Update*
This DOES seem to have done the trick....  Or At least, I can check my Email again.... In the future I will be MUCH more careful about which browser add-ons I use.... I just really liked the Freecorder one because it allowed you to save video files and convert them to mp3s, but I guess I will need to find some other converter to do this....
YOU ROCK!!

Oh and thanks again, a MILLION times, I know you did me a solid by helping with this!!

Your computer is clean p3879546.jpg

1. We need to reset system restore to prevent your computer from being accidentally reinfected by using some old restore point(s). We'll remove all old restore points and create fresh, clean restore point.

Turn system restore off.
Restart computer.
Turn system restore back on.

If you don't know how to do it...
Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310405
Vista and Windows 7: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-system-restore-in-windows-vista/
Windows 8: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/windows-8-system-restore-guide/#disable

2. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

3. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Launch a quick scan now" link)

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly.

8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

10. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

11. Read:
How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html
Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/keep-your-computer-safe-online/

12. Except for MBAM and TFC, which are keepers you can simply delete all other tools we used as they don't install.

Not a problem, but I did have one more question about your final reply post....

I downloaded, and installed the Securia application as suggested, but when I tried to run it I was told that one of the programs I needed to manually update was Internet Explorer 11 (64bit), and when I clicked it Windows Updates opened, but that was not on the list of available updates, neither was Microsoft C++ Redistributable (64 bit), which was also listed as needing an update, and claimed to need to be done manually through Windows Updates??

Am I using it wrong?? :scratchhead:
