Cannot Open Volume For Direct Access - Start-up Error

I tried to run the error checking utility in the tools menu in my computer. It prompted me to restart and since then I have been getting an error message on start-up - a blue xp screen with an error message saying "cannot open volume for direct access". I googled this error message - microsoft just tells you this error has been fixed in xp sp2 - I have this installed with all updates. other support forums where this error is listed advise to uninstall spyware doctor or any anti-spyware so the disk is unlocked on start-up and start in safe mode - however my pc now freezes in safe mode. other forums suggest using run - cmd chkdsk (numerous versions which do not solve the problem) - these havent worked either. I have used system restore and all anti-spyware you suggest. I could live with the error message itself but its that i cant run safe mode now since that worries me. any help would be really appreciated! below is my hijack this log - this maybe useless but I dont know - trying everything!

Hello eddiesgranniesjam and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I see no signs of viruses or malware in the log. There is 1 housekeeping item we can cleanup so let's do that while you are here.

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E8B31A72-AACE-412D-AA2C-D03FA6FCCDEF} - (no file)
Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

As for the chkdsk issue about the only thing that you can try is to run chkdsk from the Recovery Console. Forinformation on how to boot into the Recovery Console see this link:

Once in Recovery Console run chkdsk from there. There should be no processes locking the disk while in the Recovery Console. For additional assistance with the Recovery Console or other non-malware related issues I recommend posting a question in the XP forum. There might even be someone there who has encountered a similar issue and has a solution already. Let them know that you have been to this forum and that no malware was found on the system.
