My computer freezes occasionally for no apparent reason. It never does so while I'm using the computer - rather, it happens when I leave the computer on for an extended period of time without any activity when I leave the house or have to go to work.

My friend told me that it has something to do with the second hard drive that I took out of my old computer and installed into my current one, but others told me that was not true. I'm not certain, so I posted this here - anyone know what the problem could possibly be? Thanks in advance.

if you look in your task manager, it can expose cpu hogging processes which can cause sluggish response time, if not, then process explorer (a BC approved application found in the download section) is a more micro-forensic application that digs deeper. i have the same issue, and it turns out to be a common anti-virii app running in the background that got a little hyperactive as the sysem remained powered on overnight , even without networking.

Tried that, and after watching it for a while, nothing really seems to be taking much memory. The highest program, after turning off stuff like anti-virus, Google Chrome, and all that stuff is Skype, and it is not even taking a lot of memory.

the most common culprits are RAM filling up and address requests overflowing into paging (swapping hard drive for RAM), and any given process that could possibly be hogging CPU resources.  if you browse through the topics, you will see members asking for readouts from internal system audit apps like mini tool box and speccy. a seasoned user can browse through your readouts and track down  anything out of order.

i wouldn't suspect an additional hard drive causing sluggish performance after a substantial period away from the running PC.

i see a SMART warning on your seagate hard drive, and loads of google chrome open. this could be a sign of malware. other users may chime in soon.

is only one of these hard drives an actual boot drive? i see a multiple partition config, usually that is what users do to have multiple boot options with multiple operating systems that can be set with an intial BIOS tweaking.

I'll do a Malware test, though I do have a habit of having many Chrome tabs up. And I do mean a lot.

And yes, there is only one boot drive. The other is just plugged in, and allowing to have access onto it whenever I need to.

excellent, usually a SMART warning isn't indicative of malware, but a process count over 100 could be. seagate has a diagnostic tool, i have a seagate myself that i use for storage and it is serving up a SMART warning also, and it has the seatools app with the companion disk, or the OEM website has it. i ran it and it came back clean, then i installed another backup storage Hitachi drive for safety sake., then i ran the third party HDsentinel for a second opinion on my seagate, clean again.

also, i use Avast for malware scanning, it is slow, so i usually start it around bedtime and send everything to quarantine that it finds. it offers a boot time scan also, but if you aren't there to direct traffic everytime it finds suspect files, it will stop and await instruction, so i usually hang around until it finds one and direct it to do the same thing everytime, either delete or sandbox.

sometimes i leave my XP machine running overnight to get extra heat out of my fans for my room on cold nights, only to occasionally awaken to the sound of my hard drive grinding incessantly and my CPU fan whistling around 4500 RPMs. i look into my task manager for insight, and below and behold, my fwapping comodo AV is driving my 90nm p4 hyperthreaded CPU insane..it has a mind of its own, while i am present and connected and networked, my CPU idles at around 5% usage hour after hour, but leave it alone unconnected for a few hours and wham,  CPU resources are maxed and taxed.  my win7 machine doesn't do that.  what tha ________.
