Hello,

This is my first post here @ BC. I have a HP laptop running Windows 7 that is going through some problems, perhaps too many to list.

The computer had gone black screen on me some time ago, and i dont have the knowledge to fix so it sat dormi for a while. I found on you tube a way to get rid of black screen (by holding power button) until reboot. That worked like a charm and the screen worked again. However I then had to restore the system which i did thinking what was left to lose. The restore appears to have worked as I am now able to use it.

It does have some quirky things going on like a few DLL errors, failed updates of service packs etc. non working touch pad, inability to open IE9, erratic operation of the CD drive to name a few.

Being fairly computer illiterate I am hoping someone here can point me in the right direction to getting this "bleeping computer" running fully again.

I look forward to any advice!

 Thank you,

This startup error comes up as      hkcmd.exe - Ordinal Not Found

To help us get started I need you to post a couple things so we can see what's happening.

Please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 , taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Please download Mini Toolbox  MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

 Checkmark the following checkboxes:

• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs
• List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
• List Minidump Files

Click on Go to start the scan.  Once it is finished highlight the text, copy it and paste it in your next post.

Thanks.

Minitoolbox reports a lot of windows update errors and the error code points to IE 8 so they mat be connected.

How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer in Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378

You may also try the following steps as mentioned below:

1) Click on start, control panel, programs and feature

2) Click on “TURN WINDOWS FEATURES ON OR OFF

3) Uncheck an option for Internet explorer 8

4) Click ok and restart the computer

5) Once you back on desktop follow steps 1 & 2, and place a check mark for Internet explorer 8

6) Click ok and restart the computer

7) Once you back on desktop try launching internet explorer.

If this  doesn't work, please try uninstalling IE, try to do your updates then reinstall if you choose to.

Please download Revo Uninstaller and uninstall IE then have it scan for left over traces. When it's done, reboot and try to install updates.

I thought about that after I posted it. Here's instructions form microsoft. This says IE9 but I'm sure it'll be the same. BTW, I do this cause it's fun so you are no hassle.

To uninstall Internet Explorer

If you're trying to uninstall Internet Explorer because of an issue with the browser, first check to see if a solution is listed in Internet Explorer 9 Help and How-to.

The following instructions apply to both Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

  1. Click the Start button 4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33_818, type Programs and Features in the search box, and then click View installed updates in the left pane.
  2. Under Uninstall an update, scroll down to the Microsoft Windows section.

  3. Right-click Windows Internet Explorer 9, click Uninstall, and then, when prompted, click Yes.

  4. Click one of the following:

    • Restart now (to finish the process of uninstalling Internet Explorer 9 and restore the previous version of Internet Explorer).

    • Restart later

Note
  • After you uninstall Internet Explorer 9, the previously installed version of Internet Explorer will be available on your PC. It isn't necessary to reinstall.

If the previous steps didn't work to uninstall Internet Explorer, see How to uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 9 when the standard uninstallation process doesn't work.

Ok well i think weve made progress as i had to use the How to uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 9 when the standard uninstallation process doesn't work.

The first option "fix it" did not work got message-

runDLL

There was a problem starting inetcpl.cpl

the operating system cannot run %1.

the second option "CMD" seemed to do something as the windows features box now shows IE8.

however upon retsart i got the dreaded ordinal 121 again?

Please try downloading malwarebytes from htp://malwarebytes.org and running a full scan. I'm wondering if we may not have a virus or two. I am headed to bed to get my beauty sleep. (My wife insists I need all I can get. ) Please post the log in your next post and we'll tackle it again tomorrow.

malwarebytes upon startup gets an error-

run-time error '339':

component 'ieframe.dll' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid
