Running PC with Vista. Unable to connect to internet even when booted in safe mode with networking.

Here are some of the things I have checked & programs I've run

Use Proxy - not checked

SuperAntiSpyware says not supported by operating system (can't remember exact words)

Spybot found nothing (scanned in less than 2 seconds)

Avast - full scan nothing found

Malwarebytes - stops working instantly. - disabled shield control still not run

Tried a couple of other DOS commands found in various forums but I finally give up.

This Laptop is connected wirelessly to the same network. PC has broadband connection so don't believe it is the router.

Please help.

Thanks

Also no system restore points

Possible reason for SuperAntiSpyware not compatible - PC 32 bit, laptop 64 bit therefore downloading the wrong version

Are you sure you're connected to the network and can ping the router? Also, can you open up a command prompt and post the results of the ipconfig /all command? I'm almost completely certain that the issue isn't due to any sort of malware, especially after booting into safe mode with networking—a much more likely scenario might be an altered TCP/IP configuration or a driver freaking out.

Hi yc2013,

Can you download and run MiniToolBox by Farbar on the affected PC and select the options shown below:

Flush DNS

Report IE Proxy Settings

Reset IE Proxy Settings

Report FF Proxy Settings

Reset FF Proxy Settings

List content of Hosts

List IP Configuration

List Winsock Entries

List last 10 Event Viewer Errors

List Installed Programs

List Restore Points

Click Go.

Once the program has finished running a Notepad document 'Result.txt' will open.  Please copy and paste the content of this log in your next post.

Hi yc2013,

Can you right click on the network icon in the notification area of the Taskbar and select Diagnose and Repair.

Please let me know the result.

Please go to Control Panel > Device Manager

Are there any entries with a yellow triangle against them?

Can you list the network adapters and identify which ones have the yellow triangle?

I think it is the free version.

My husband just told me he inadvertently downloaded the trial version and then at the end of the trail tried to go back to the free version.  Would this be the problem?

Yes, I think it is.

Please download a fresh installation file for Avast Free and also download http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe.

  1. Start Windows in Safe Mode
  2. Run the avastclear.exe utility
  3. If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
  4. Click REMOVE
  5. Restart your computer

Go to Device Manager > Network Adapters

For all adapters that have a yellow triangle next to them or contain 'avast Firewall NDIS Filter Miniport' in their name, right click and select Uninstall.

Restart your computer.

Now install Avast Free.

You should be able to access the internet now.  Please let me know how you get on.
