I have xp on a desk top. SP3. MSE installed. Dont think this is a virus issue but an OS issue. Things are missing, e.g. icons on desk top are now "generic" and won't open the program (however I can make the program open by going to a document, clicking on that and then the program, in this case wordperfect, then opens). Also my System Information dialog box says it cannot collect any info on the system. Microsoft Fixit wont run (error codes 80040402 and 80072EE7) and system restore will run but says it cannot restore system to an earlier date. I've had an Error during initialization error message. My networking options folder on control panel is now blank but I'm able to access internet wirelessly (which is how I always did it). Attached is a error log too. So some programs work just fine (e.g. windows media player) others don't open at all (Firefox) and some open indirectly (like wordperfect above). Did chkdsk a few times and it ran and same problems exist. Any ideas?

This is the error message in the event system log:

This does sound like a virus infection.  BOOT to SAFE mode and do your restore from that mode.  IF that fails, does your unit have "flash" BIOS??  If so, a factory reset to default settings and booting to the safe mode will allow you to run anti-virus programs.  One of the first things a virus will do is stop you from eradicating it by disabling any protection.  Some install themselves in the BIOS via "flash" and will remain active no matter how you try, thus the default settings forces booting from the firmware and not the flash chip.

Create a new user account as administrator, login to that new account and check how it works.

Refer the link “Create a user account” to create new user account.

If it works in new user account, then the other user should be a corrupted.

To fix the corrupted user account, follow the steps from article: Fix a corrupted user profile

Ok here's the latest. I tried creating a new user account. I still have nothing appearing in my Network Connections box in the control panel. When I tried to open WordPerfect from the newly created user account I received an error message "Problem with shortcut--feature ID not registered". Attached as minitoolbox and speccy reports and the blue screen of death report I saw suggested in another post.

To MJD:

could not boot to safe mode. received error message that there was a keyboard failure. rebooted got into bios and could not find a reset to default button tab etc anywhere. I now have turned off MSE and am running a malware bytes full system scan. once rebooted keyboard works. go figure.

Malware bytes fullscan done. No problems found/reported. I think something is wrong with windows (e.e corrupt or missing file) rather than virus. Any other suggestions based upon what I have posted?

I see those errors from the validation of the OS.  That will throw a monkey wrench in all kinds of normal system functions.  This sure sounds like a serious virus that has you completely locked out.  It is curious that there's no factory reset in the BIOS, usually along the bottom row.  Some require a SAVE after choosing the option and then a reboot.  Another thing to do is to isolate the machine, no network access, block the MAC address at the router or upplug the CAT5 cable from the network interface card.

was able to get into safe mode, ran another malware bytes scan while in safe mode and got nothing. network icons still missing, can't install programs; other programs won't start either but many do (e.g. open office and windows media player work fine).  DO I run sfc /scannow fron the start run prompt? or from some other place? Thanks again.

ran, completed and went away, nothing has changed on the machine. Was not asked to insert start up or recovery disc (and I don't have one specific to this machine but do have a dell windows instllation disc from another dellcomputer). As noted above, when I ran sfc /scannow after typingin run cmd, my command prompt was not the same as that the moderatorshowed in his screen shot.

Thank you. I found a recovery console ISO file here on bleeping computer and installed and ran that. No changes to the way things run/don't run. I also have a xp home spe3 installation/recovery and am running that now. Will do as you suggest once that is done. Did run the Mini Tool Box once before and I think I posted it above. Also have speccy installed and ran it but will do it as you suggest. Thank you again for your assistance. I'm beginning to think I just need to bite the bullet and buy new or refurb 'puter. Since xpisn't going to be supported, if I go that route do I go Win7 or 8? Which is most stable?
