We have Windows 7 (64-bit) Home Premium Edition.

Apparently, there have been problems when trying to do backups (the VSS service?). I have checked the Event Viewer (in Admin Tools), and I managed to find out how to save log details. I am not that experienced when it comes to Windows and PCs, although I tried Googling and doing some detective work.  I should point out, that I can't see any yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager.

I got the following details:

Log Name:      Application
Source:        VSS
Date:          23/12/2013 18:21:54
Event ID:      12348

Denying administrators from accessing volume roots can cause many unexpected failures, and will prevent VSS from functioning properly.  Check security on the volume, and try the operation again.

I am guessing there is a corrupted registry key or something?  I searched for the string 560afb57-1509-11e0-845c-d02788177603 using regedit, and it took me to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\\MountedDevices.  I could see a load of Hexadecimal numbers, but I didn't proceed any further than that.

Thanks if anyone can assist me with this.

You must be logged on as an Administrator to resolve this issue.

Open an elevated Command Prompt window. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

Assuming that your root volume is C: (if your operating system is installed on a different drive, substitute with the correct drive letter), type:

icacls C:\ /grant system:f

Then hit Enter.

That should fix the issue.  If it does not please post back.

I have already tried that, thanks.

I haven't noticed any VSS errors in the log.  However, there are Service Control Manager errors occasionally (event ID 7034, 7011) and also VDS Basic Service errors (error ID 1).

Sorry if this is a bit vague, but I'm not sure what's causing what at the moment.

What happens when you go to start the VSS via Services in Administrative Tools located in Control Panel?

Volume Shadow Copy?

Yes, the service is able to start. (it's currrently set to Automatic)

It's just that in the past when my parents have tried to do backups to an external hard drive, it's failed for some reason (after about two days via USB 2.0 !), there was some error message part-way through.

In the Action Centre, under Maintenance, back-up monitoring is currently turned off.  We don't have an external HDD connected at the moment (they used to), but they would like to connect one - they have one waiting - they had problems with the last one.

Thanks for replying cryptodan :)

Whichever really - library backups (e.g. Documents, Pictures etc), individual files, or if necessary whole hard drive backups, images (or clones) from time to time as a precautionary measure.  Whatever necessary.

We have EASEUS Todo Backup Home 6.1, and also Paragon Backup and Recovery 12 Compact.  In terms of backup media, they have a Seagate Expansion Desktop 2TB (USB 3.0).

Thanks for replying once again.

THose tools maybe causing the backup feature in Windows Malfunction, so i would try one of those and see if you are satisfied with it. I would probably trust EASUES.

Actually, I've only recently put EASEUS and the Paragon utility on, my parents reported the problem a long time before that, so those programs didn't make WIndows Backup malfunction, there's some other reason.

Thanks for your reply.

Does anyone have any suggestions please as to what I can do about the problems I'm having?  Yes, I can use EASEUS - that's a possibility - although I'm still sure we shouldn't be having the problems that we were.  Is anything in need of further tests or repairs?  Is there any cause for concern in any way from the logs that I've already posted.

Thanks for your help and suggestions so far guys.
