My Asus Netbook crashed a couple of weeks ago. I found a refurbished Asus Netbook for a good price and ordered it. It turned out to be a PC 1015PE and is a different Netbook. I was very sucessful in updating the 1015PE  with Win7 Home Premium. While doing this it made me think that I should try the very same thing with the "crashed" 1015T. I reinstalled Win7 from my family pack and it sort of came back to life. It is working fine now except I have lost all audio function and when I try to play a youtube video for instance it initially plays but then fails. I updated Java and Java cannot verify my installation. I tried several times with no success. The email program (actually MS Office)  installed and setup correctly. I also installed Word from the same package. I ran all the updates (seemed like 200 or so) including Win7 and Office. The device manager reports the audio driver is the most current and reports the audio is working properly.

Now I just noticed that my desktop shortcuts are disappearing. I had several setup like to My Computer, Add/Remove Programs, Control Panel and they have all gone away. I loaded AVG free that I run on all my other machines and did all the updates and a full scan. The hard drive had been completely formatted so there was no Windows.old folder. I also installed and ran Malwarebytes with updates and a full scan that reported nothing. I have done a Disk Check and a Defragmentation.

It's acting like it's haunted!

Anyone have any ideas?

Please try to enter safe mode with networking by tapping F8 when you power up your computer. If you are able to download Revo Uninstaller http://www.revouninstaller.com. Uninstall driversforfree. Let it scan for left over traces and delete them. While in safe mode with networking try to run windows updates.

Also please run this.

Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
    • Other Services
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.

Now Malwarebytes is detecting 39 threats. Removing them.

Ok removed but nothing changed as far as sound. I can play youtube videos now but no sound.

I have also just noticed that some of my Function key functions are not working. Func-F3 used to turn the touchpad on and off. Not now.

Something else...

There is a rocker switch on this "T" model on the top left side above the keyboard opposite of the Power button. This used to turn on/off the WiFi (right side) and select "speedboost" modes with a left click. These functions are also gone.

Can you perform a full system scan?

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Clean.
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • You will be prompted to restart your computer. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
    • Other Services
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.
