It sounds like the file type association has become corrupted.  Go to http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.html and follow the instructions given there for the LNK file extension and see if that fixes the problem.

You might want to also follow the advice at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/34773/preparation-guide-for-use-before-using-malware-removal-tools-and-requesting-help/ to identify if the problem has been caused by malware.

Well...does the problem remain?

If so, then you may want to try:  Rebuild Win 7 Icon Cache .

Sorry for been unclear, restoring the file type associations did not work, I have just followed your advise to rebuild the windows 7 icon cache but when my computer restarted I still had notepad icons instead of the proper ones

Your help is appreciated,

Did you try a system restore to a time just before the issue started?

Start Menu/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.

When system restore opens you can choose one from the list presented or check the box for Show me more restore points if you need to go back beyond the last date presented in the list.

Where are these icons? Are they showing up as Notepad icons in only one place, such as your desktop or Documents, etc? Or are ALL icons related to your user account Notepad icons? (Meaning those on desktop, Libraries, etc).

You said they don't work. What does or does not happen when you click them? Are you getting any error messages when they don't work?

They show up everywhere as notepad icons, when I click on them it opens notepad and some file paths show up with some weird code, and last but not least I don't get any error messages

Thanks,

James
