Many thanks to everyone working on this site.  I've used it a few times in the past to solve problems without posting.

A couple of weeks ago my spouse reported keyboard lag.  All input from the keyboard is delayed before appearing on the screen, whether in a browser or in MS Office. The system is not used for gaming.  There is no other kind of lag, just the keyboard--everything else works great., including the mouse.

System (purchased in 2009?)

Dell Inspiron 560

6 GB RAM

Windows 7 (64 bit)

What I've done

1. Run Malwarebytes Antimalware, performed full scan.  Report says system is clean.

2. Ensured EasyAccess options for keyboard are all disabled.

3. Tried another keyboard.

4. Deleted old Java updates.

5. Started up in BIOS, and although there is limited opportunity for keyboard use there, there seemed to be no delay with cursor use in BIOS.

I also ran a Windows' tool which provided scores on various system components on a scale up to 7.9. My lowest scores were graphics related--3.6 for 'Gaming graphics' and 4.4 for 'Graphics'.  My display adapter type is Intel® G45/G43 Express Chipset.  The tool had the following to say about my system graphics:

Total available graphics memory: 1695 MB

     Dedicated graphics memory:  64 MB

     Dedicated system memory:  0 MB

     Shared system memory:  1631 MB

Display adapter driver version: 8.15.10.2202

Primary monitor resolution:  1920x1080

DirectX version:  DirectX10

I'm not sure where to take it from here and would appreciated any suggestions.  Could it be a keylogger not picked up by MBAM?  Could I have  a problem with my graphics card?  Folks with Dell laptops report keyboard lag that was fixed by removing the battery--could I have a power problem? Thanks!

If its continuously doing it, it seems very odd.. How is the keyboard connected, through a USB or PS2 port?  Is it always 'lagging' by the same amount of time? If you open up Device Manager (right click Computer, Properties, Device Manager) are there any items which are highlighted with a yellow exclamation mark?  Does this problem still happen in Safe Mode?

Lowish scores in graphics capability are to be expected for Intel G45/G43 integrated graphics - I don't think that indicates a problem.

Hi jonuk76 & thanks for the reply!

Keyboard: connected by USB.

Lagging:  When holding down a key in MS Word continuously, during the first 5 seconds only a few characters appear (approx. 2 per second).  During the next 3 seconds characters appear about as quickly as they should.  Then back to the 5 slow seconds, followed by 3 normal seconds.  Repeat.  Same in a web browser.  This doesn't sound so bad I guess, but when typing normally, it is a problem.

Device Manager:  A-OK.

Safe Mode:  Problem does NOT occur in safe mode.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Safe mode working OK would seem to rule out a hardware problem, so the problem lies somewhere within Windows.  If possible, try another USB port (preferably one not directly next to one it's currently in).  Just unplug it while the PC is running and plug it in another, allow it to re-detect the k/b and see if there's any improvement.

Failing the above helping, it's possible that something that is running on your PC is causing the lag.  The best course of action then would be to do the following which will provide more information about whats running on the computer:

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 , taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Different USB port worked temporarily.  Stopped working when I showed my spouse!  Here are the results from MiniToolBox.

Hi Wimsey

Hope by now you were able to solve your problem. I came across your post just now and since I didnt see a clear resolution I thought I'd join the site and reply to your problem.

This happened to me last week and took me out of action for 2 days - its my work PC.

Found out the issue was a conflict with my Samsung CLX3300 wireless MFP's print driver and scanner driver.

Printing seem to be fine on mine but as soon as I use the scanner it messes with my system and my keyboard experiences the severe lag in typing. Mouse is not affected. However the longer it remains unresolved the worse it gets and soon I was experiencing the dreaded BSOD. Key input also went awry and caused menu items to be selected randomly.

If you disable the CDASrv.exe via msconfig it should fix the problem. Seems that helped for my system (Win 7). It launches CDAS2PC.exe and this seems to be whats happened with your system too judging from your error log above.

I am still recovering from that lost 2 days so I was looking for any updates on the Samsung drivers that addresses this issue and has solved it.

So far no luck in finding a fix. But I may not have looked hard enough.

As a work around I manually launch the CDASrv and use the scanner. Once done I kill them via the Task Manager. And I get my system back.

In any case hope this helps you or anyone else who has a Samsung printer and is in dire straits wrt key lags and dont know where it came from after trying all the other obvious solutions out there.

cheers

SJ

Hi SJ60,

Thanks so much for posting this reply.  (In fact I was not able to resolve it and in the end I resorted to a format and Windows re-install since we needed it back up and running).  Lots of down time and frustration.  Thankfully it never got as bad as the BSOD.  I had meant to post the outcome, but ...  Will do so in future.)

As luck would have it (and as I see you know), I too have a Samsung wireless MFP printer/scanner (an SCX model).  AND although the scanner gets used rarely, I had used it right about the time this problem popped up.  I can't recall the whole thing anymore, but I had difficulty getting it to work for me--I believe I used a wire to get it to work, and I think I may even have reinstalled a driver.  As I said, I rarely use the bleeping thing.

I believe I will encounter this problem again--I'll be using the scanner later this week, and then again in a couple of months.  I have printed (gasp!) your response and filed it with my computer related documents.  Thank you for taking the time to post this.  I think you will save me a lot of grief in the future.

Many thanks!

Thank you very much SJ60

I can confirm CDASrv.exe and resulting CDAS2PC.exe directly cause a lag when typing (in my case).

When CDASrv.exe is stopped in task manager, typing and general system processes are restored to normal.

The issue has nothing to do with RAM, BIOS, HDD. It likely only affects older versions of Windows (Windows XP, Windows 7).

Info:

- CDASrv.exe is part of the driver / software setup with a Samsung Multi-function Printer / Scanner (2 years old)

- CDASrv.exe loads at Startup, then loads CDAS2PC.exe

- Keyboard / typing lag occurs on Startup

- Side note: CDAS2PC.exe starts eating memory as soon as it's loaded

Current fix:

- We're using different printers for each machine.

- We've disabled CDASrv.exe on startup

The bright side:

- The problem's not with the computers, it's with the printer driver / software / conflicts.

- To be fair, OS support for hardware can't reach back to the days of Windows XP.
