Hello, Bleeping Computer.

I hate having to come back to ask for help so soon after the last time, but my computer has just started having problems again and I am at a total loss as to what I should do. Recently, I had gotten a hold of the new firewall/anti-virus software that I wanted to replace Microsoft Security Essentials with, but when I tried to get rid of MSE to put the new one on my computer MSE stopped working and wouldn't let me uninstall it. Then, just today with MSE still off, my computer became infected with some sort of Conduit search engine that replaced itself as Firefox's homepage and wouldn't let me get rid of it for a while. I did managed to clean out most of it and fix that problem [my home page is back to what it had been], but it is still there and now affects my New Tabs [whenever I try to open a new tab, it redirects to Conduit]. As well as all this, Internet Explorer has suddenly begun to open itself at random times and display an add and/or a request to update Firefox.

Other than that, my computer seems to be working fine, but from what I read about Conduit it is still a major threat and I want to get it off my computer as quickly and safely as possible before working on uninstalling MSE to  get the new software on my computer and working on fixing the issue with IE [though we can do these in any order, going on your better judgement].

Please respond when you can!

Many Thanks,

Carly

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

step1.gif In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/518127 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

step2.gifIf you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from the following link if you no longer have it available and save it to your destop.

    DDS.com Download Link
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control can be found HERE.

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Problems I am having:

  • Microsoft Security Essentials currently will not/can not be uninstalled off of my computer.
  • Internet Explorer opens itself with an advertisement at random times whenever I am using my computer.

Problems I no longer have:

  • Conduit Search Page no longer opens up when I choose a New Tab [I managed to fix this myself through about:config on my browser].

Steps I have Performed:

  • Using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, I have quick-scanned my computer several times [and now do it relatively periodically], removing anything that it detected. As well as this, I did a full-scan with it just last Monday and [probably] successfully removed the two bugs that it detected.
  • I have also used Revo Uninstaller to get rid of any unwanted software that I could find on it, most of which were things related to Conduit and Norton.

Yes, I do have my original Windows CD/DVD available.

Hello Nasdaq,

As of this post my computer is still having the problems it did before. Though Internet Explorer does not do it as often, it still occasionally pops open with an advertisement, and Microsoft Security Essentials still cannot be uninstalled off of my computer. Including this, I feel it would be good to mention that Firefox has begun to act up a bit as well, and whenever I have, say, around five tabs open it will sometimes freeze up completely [no notification that it has stopped working, no way to close it without shutting down my laptop completely, etc.]. This might be unrelated, but it's still a problem.

Many Thanks,

Carly

PS: We had a bit of trouble with downloading and running ComboFix. The icon was made for it, but whenever I tried to run it I received an error message stating that there was a problem with the download. Then, it somehow replaced HP Solutions Center on my computer and would only run on that, until it encountered an error on a script it could not read or something. My dad went in and was able to get it to work I believe [the ComboFix log below is what he managed to get], but it was still a pretty odd and severe issue to have.

Remove this old version of Java 7 Update 4 using the Add/Remove Programs.
===

Download and run this uninstaller for MSE.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/microsoft-security-essentials-removal-tool/

You should then re-install the application or some other Virus protection software.

It is really dangerous to go online without an antivirus. Without one, you are extremely likely to get infected and the consequences could be even worse next time. All of the following are excellent free versions of commercial antiviruses. Be sure to only install one.
AVG.
If you install AVG it will install Chrome unless you deny it.
avast!.
AVAST will install the Google Chrome if not already installed. If you do not want to keep it just remove it using the Add/Remove Programs list.

If Internet Explorer is still giving you pop-ups, try this.

Click the StartBtn.gif button. In the Search box, type Command Prompt, and then, in the list of results, double-click Command Prompt.

at the cursor type:
ipconfig /flushdns <-- (A space between g and / is needed)

repeat with
ipconfig /renew

Then hit Enter, type Exit, hit the Enter key.

You may need to run CMD - Command Prompt on Vista - Windows 7/8 with Elevated Privilege

Hello Nasdaq,

Sorry for the late response; my holiday week has been a lot busier than I had originally intended it to be.

Though we had followed the instructions given, MSE still would not uninstall off of my computer, so we tried to do something different but still similar [following instructions given at Microsoft help pages], and now I think MSE is off, but I'm not entirely sure. I've searched through everything that I could and did not find any traces of it, but the Anti-Virus software that we want to replace it with is now having problems of its own and won't install itself.

[If it helps at all, the software we want to use is called BitDefender]

Including this, I did try using Command Prompt, and it supposedly worked just fine, but IE still occasionally pops up with an advertisement.

Many Thanks,

Carly

Clean the Java Cache. Tutorial here.
http://www.java.com/en/download/help/plugin_cache.xml
<<<>>>

Let see what I can find out why you are unable to install Bitdefender.

Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Let me know which Extensions / add-ons you do not recognize in IE.

Hello Nasdaq,

After the second time I restarted my computer, IE actually stopped popping up with advertisements, and it hasn't caused any more problems since. However I would also like to say that the homepage on it had been changed to the Google home page, but would not load and only gave a blank white space no matter how long I waited. As well as this, since I never use IE, I honestly don't recognize any of its Extensions/add-ons, though they seemed relatively 'okay' when I looked over them.

I cleaned the Java Cache as requested [I had already previously removed Java 7 Update 4; my apologies for not mentioning this].

Many Thanks,

Carly

Open Internet Explorer.
In the URL bar enter the site you with to open.

When available, Select the Tool menu then Internet Options.

In the General Tab Select Use "Use Current" and click the Apply button.

That page should open next time you start IE.

Hello Nasdaq,

I had already changed the homepage to Bing instead.

No, I was unable to install BitDefender, even after multiple tries. It always gets to the "Installation in progress..." stage and freezes at 'Scanning 1%' with 0% in 'Downloading' and 'Installing'. Whenever I cancel, it says that one of the installation files failed and that I should check my internet connection settings before trying again.

Many Thanks,

Carly

I managed to successfully install BitDefender, so my computer is now clean and protected. As far as I am aware, my computer is no longer experiencing any issues.

Thank you for the help.

Sincerely,

Carly

Please consider using these ideas to help secure your computer. While there is no way to guarantee safety when you use a computer, these steps will make it much less likely that you will need to endure another infection. While we really like to help people, we would rather help you protect yourself so that you won't need that help in the future.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates or get into the habit of checking Windows Update regularly. They usually have security updates every month. You can set Windows to notify you of Updates so that you can choose, but only do this if you believe you are able to understand which ones are needed. This is a crucial security measure.

Having an effective antivirus is a must for everyone.
In addition to many excellent commercial products there are plenty of good free antivirus programs available. I can recommend:

If you are satisfied with your current protection programs you can ignore the instructions on Antivirus or Firewall listed below. In addition to an antivirus I recommend using a firewall. A software firewall is a software program that helps screen out hackers, viruses, and worms that try to reach your computer over the Internet. I can recommend one of the following free products:Please note: Many installer offer third-party downloads that are installed automatically when you do not uncheck certain checkboxes. While most of the time not being malicious you usually do not want these on your computer. Be careful during the installation process and you will avoid seeing tons of new unwanted toolbars in your favorite web browser.

Please consider installing and running some of the following programs; they are either free or have free versions of commercial programs:

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM)
The free version of MBAM can be used to scan the system for traces of malware. Scanning your system regularly will make it harder for malware to reside on your system.
A tutorial on using MBAM can be found here.
Please Note: Only the paid for version has real time capabilities.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent malware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

Please keep these programs up-to-date and run them whenever you suspect a problem to prevent malware problems. A number of programs have resident protection and it is a good idea to run the resident protection of one of each type of program to maintain protection. However, it is important to run only one resident program of each type since they can conflict and become less effective. That means only one antivirus, firewall and scanning anti-spyware program at a time. Passive protectors, like SpywareBlaster can be run with any of them.

Note that there are a lot of rogue programs out there that want to scare you into giving them your money and some malware actually claims to be security programs. If you get a popup for a security program that you did not install yourself, do NOT click on it and ask for help immediately. It is very important to run an antivirus and firewall, but you can't always rely on reviews and ads for information. Ask in a security forum that you trust if you are not sure. If you are unsure and looking for anti-spyware programs, you can find out if it is a rogue here:A similar category of programs is now called "scareware." Scareware programs are active infections that will pop-up on your computer and tell you that you are infected. If you look closely, it will usually have a name that looks like it might be legitimate, but it is NOT one of the programs you installed. It tells you to click and install it right away. If you click on any part of it, including the 'X' to close it, you may actually help it infect your computer further. Keeping protection updated and running resident protection can help prevent these infections. If it happens anyway, get offline as quickly as you can. Pull the internet connection cable or shut down the computer if you have to. Contact someone to help by using another computer if possible. These programs are also sometimes called 'rogues', but they are different than the older version of rogues mentioned above.

Please keep your programs up to date. This applies to Java, Adobe Flashplayer, Adobe Reader and your Internet Browsers in particular. Vulnerabilities in these programs are often exploited in order to install malware on your PC. Visiting a prepared web page suffices to infect your system.

In general Firefox, Opera and Google Chrome are considered to be more secure than Internet Explorer. In addition there are many useful add-ons that can protect you from possible risks:
  • WOT will warn you when you try to visit sites with poor reputation. The reputation is based on user ratings and is usually very accurate.
  • Script Blocker can help blocking many attempts to infect your system via malicious websites by only allowing scripts at sites you trust.
  • NoScript is a popular Firefox addon,
  • ScriptNo a popular Google Chrome addon.
For much more useful information, please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How did I get infected in the first place

Hopefully these steps will help to keep you error free. If you run into more difficulty, we will certainly do what we can to help.
