restoring my system- starting with fixing: all safe mode options crash to bsd

Hi, my system (xp sp3-recently upgraded from sp2) is a mess. there are many problems with it. the most urgent/annoying one is: 1. when i try to boot in safe mode, all options take me to bsd. it's been like this for months. i had a huge infection back then. what info would you like to know in order to help me?

all the anti virus software i've used since i disinfected my os say it's clean. i think some (or many) of the system files are corrupt. how can i fix the ones related to safe mode (no cd)?
