I have an hp Pavilion dv7 notebook with a 2.67ghz Intel i5 core and 8gb of memory running windows 7.  Is it just my imagination or should this baby be lightning fast? I've run system cleaners Trash and temp cleaners, kaspersky rescue, bitdefender rescur and malwarebytes, and still only very little improvement in speed. Kaspersky is my AV.

I plug in a usb and it takes around a minute before the system actually "sees" it in my computer. When I try to display system info using the MSCONFIG command it can take as much as 30 seconds.

I'm suspecting the only three things I have left to suspect: the windows 7 installation itself, the incredible amount of HP bloatware. or the memory.  Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated because I'm just about out of ideas, and ready to throw this thing onto the turnpike.....

Here are the HP programs that are resident as its running right now -

Hewlett-Packard - HP Update Client Version 5, 0, 12, 0
Hewlett-Packard - HPTCS Version 8.4.4400.3525
Hewlett-Packard - hpwuSchd Application Version 80, 1, 1, 0
Hewlett-Packard - NotebookDocs Version 1.2.1.0
Hewlett-Packard Co. - HP Digital Imaging Version 022.050.231.000

This program should help you decide which is best for you to keep or remove.
http://www.shouldiremoveit.com/

Also SuperAntiSpyware has a simular function under system tools and program settings.
http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfile.html?productid=SUPERANTISPYWAREFREE

Just make sure and disable it from the start up might not hurt to run a full updated scan with it.

Let us know if you need any more help .

What makes you think that HP programs...are the only items you have installed with minimal or negative value?

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 , taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Well what i would do for better performance is buying an external hard drive and storing the extra stuff there, or change the windows theme to classic so that explorer dosent eat up to many resources. Also try CCleaner or Tune Up Utilities and Defraggler. HP software cannot be removed i think they work in compability with the hardware, also please send me a log of your processes cause sometimes the computer is slow cause of worms or viuses, that are active and those HP programs are for compability since Windows is an OS that runs on many different hradware types then there are compability problems and so on, I would keep them. Hope this helped I spend a lot of time on the computer :)

uninstall all of that stuff except "Energy Star Power Saving Utility"........

Than start looking at your other programs, bet you can remove tons of stuff you don't need. Be especially vigilant on updaters. (they are resource hogs.) DON''T uninstall .NET services... you need this stuff. If unsure of a program just google it' (ie: what is "this program") you will get the answers really quick.

A malware scan wouldn't hurt either, but this bloatware is slowing down your machine, it's not an illusion.

edit: all these 'features' are already built into Windows, this is just cr@pware... If you need help managing different file types/media just ask on here. There are loads of experienced guys who can present loads or free and great options for anything you want to do... without all this junk.

edit:edit: HP bloatware can be removed, I do it all the time. Enterprise machines don't even come with it installed, even though the machine specs are identical to consumer machines.

This website does not support the use of "registry cleaners/optimizers" such as TuneUp Utilities.  Please do not suggest such as "solutions" to system problems, since the evidence indicates that they are more likely to create problems, as opposed to solving anything.

I have an HP laptop. EVERYTHING HP has been uninstalled from it. None of it is essential to using your computer.

Having said that, please do as suggested by Hamluis and post those logs.

I manage 70 HP desktops, and a pile of HP laptops with everything HP removed too... except the energy star, for some reason I like the energy star. Something to do with stars and sparkles and stuff. :wizard:

Check for junk with the Jumkware Removal Tool.

http://thisisudax.org/

Disable windows defender.

http://www.mydigitallife.info/top-5-worst-and-useless-features-and-programs-in-windows-vista/

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/turn-windows-defender-on-off#turn-windows-defender-on-off=windows-7

Also does your version of Kaspersky have a firewall?

Reason I ask from your speccy report in quote box below.

If your version of Kaspersky has a firewall I suggest you disable the windows firewall.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/turn-windows-firewall-on-off#turn-windows-firewall-on-off=windows-7

Firewall
Firewall:
Enabled
Display Name:
Kaspersky Internet Security

Running:
Windows Firewal

You could certainly remove all of the HP software except the items below IMO.

Could do that with Revo Free.

http://www.howtogeek.com/79926/completely-uninstall-programs-and-more-with-revo-uninstaller/

HP Deskjet 3050 J610 series Basic Device Software (Version: 22.50.231.0)
HP Wireless Assistant (Version: 4.0.10.0)

Then Disable all of your start up items except.Your antivirus.

You can do that with Ccleaner which you have installed.

Open Ccleaner
Hit the tools button T

hen the start up button and disable all items except.

Kaspersky Internet Security (Version: 14.0.0.4651)

Un install old java versions.
Java™ 6 Update 21 (64-bit) (Version: 6.0.210)
Java™ 6 Update 31 (Version: 6.0.310)

Also

Mozilla Maintenance Service (Version: 25.0.1)

Also Might Consider disabling your scheduled task with Autoruns just make sure that none you disable are related to Kaspersky.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

To stop the error below from happening.

HP wireless assistant is junk, it's just a program that modifies network settings. If you know how to connect to the wirelss with Windows (or how to use Google) you don't need it.

Would speed you up a lot to uninstall all the parts of Windows Live you don't use also. select uninstall from the uninstall programs menu, then you'll get the modify option.

Turning off Windows Defender is not a good idea, there is no logical reason to do that unless you are having a conflict with another application.

There is a well rated program out there (free) called shouldIremoveit. I've never used it, but the reviews are pretty shiny.......... You may wish to try that.

edit: I disable ipv6 on all my machines too, I think that is great advice.

I hope you dont disable IPv6 on your domain controllers running DFSR/DFSN? That would be a no no for sure mate! IPv6 is still utilised on many service applications on Servers.

Well what i would do for better performance is buying an external hard drive and storing the extra stuff there, or change the windows theme to classic so that explorer dosent eat up to many resources. Also try CCleaner or Tune Up Utilities and Defraggler.

This website does not support the use of "registry cleaners/optimizers" such TuneUp Utilities.  Please do not suggest such as "solutions" to system problems, since the evidence indicates that they are more likely to create problems, as opposed to solving anything.

Registry cleaner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Registry_cleaner

Microsoft support policy for the use of registry cleaning utilities - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2563254

Registry Cleaner FAQ, PC Support - http://pcsupport.about.com/od/registry-cleaner/a/registry-cleaner-faq.htm

Why You Should Not Use...

Louis

Personally. I don't use the registry cleaner, but I love using CCleaner to clean out old temp files/cache, etc. Also it has an uninstall interface I am fond of, and also allows you to control startup programs.

I use autoruns (admin) to disable startup of many of these unnecessary hp utils but I noticed some items were off limits to uncheck in Autoruns.

Long story short, there are reg keys called AutorunsDisabled under several hp keys (and elsewhere) most of which are now deleted.

Thanks - great forum.
