So after repeated problems from missing functions, I've had to reinstall Windows.

I found one option in the Gateway Backup Manager that allows keeping user files. I selected that. No problem right? NOPE! The reinstall failed, forcing me to download an ISO of Windows 7 so I could reinstall it myself. Unfortunately, this means that drivers were wiped clean.

So now I need the drivers found out again.

The make and model is  Gateway DX-4840-15; the Windows version is Windows 7 Home Premium. (Not sure what those two last numbers are there for.) A few things were changed out: the GPU was replaced by EVGA GeForce GT 640, the PSU should be a 300w one now.

I'd like to know the sound drivers in particular.

ADDED: I believe I found the missing sound driver tucked away in the Gateway website. Still, if anyone here could help...

Hi RisingManes,

Most manufacturer drivers can be located at the manufacturer's support website, in this case:

http://support.gateway.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=2294 and http://www.evga.com/support/download/default.aspx

I would download and install all of the drivers from Gateway starting with the chipset, and if any installation asks you to reboot, please do so before installing the next driver. Once complete, download the EVGA Driver from their support site, where you need to select the family (Geforce 600 Series) and Operating System and type for installation. Install the driver and reboot as necessary.

That should take care of your drivers based on the support site and your description, and depending on the type of sound card your system has, the chipset driver may take care of that as an onboard device. If you are still having issues after that, please follow the steps below and post the resulting log.

We need to scan your devices with MiniToolBox:

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • List Devices (No Driver)
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need any additional information.

Best Regards,
whoabuddy

Roodo: I tried a non-destructive reinstall. It failed. As I was very sure I lost the software, and didn't want a full factory reset because I didn't think I'd need a backup, I began to improvise to make one before my next reinstall attempt. The tale involves a laptop, Notepad, a flash drive and a Windows 7 installation disc. But I managed to salvage the installation, at the cost of all the drivers.

My point: I don't wanna do it all over again.

@whoabuddy: I did it at a different order, I think. But the initial reason I did this is because my games were behaving oddly, with sound and graphics stuttering. I sleuthed out the missing sound controller, Realtek High Definition Audio. Works fine so far; I just need to doublecheck everything.

And now, the weather my Results log.

@whoabuddy: I did it at a different order, I think. But the initial reason I did this is because my games were behaving oddly, with sound and graphics stuttering. I sleuthed out the missing sound controller, Realtek High Definition Audio. Works fine so far; I just need to doublecheck everything.

Got it, I've had trouble with finding a Realtek audio driver before, glad that part is fixed. Sometimes installing a different version of the graphics card driver can help with that, either a Beta or older version, but it's best to make backups before/after just in case.

As far as the Results log, did you have the No Driver option selected as well? I think the log should be a lot shorter but if you did, try it with Problems Only instead and post the resulting log.

Best Regards,
whoabuddy

Hi RisingMane,

It looks like all of your drivers are installed correctly based on those logs, the mouse driver error can be ignored if your USB mouse is working normally. How is the performance now that you have installed and updated everything? Are you still having trouble?

Best Regards,
whoabuddy

For starters your PSU is inadequate for your video card which can cause issues for your entire system. Your PSU is 300 Watts, yet per eVGA's recommendations the following is the bare minimum:

Minimum of a 350 Watt power supply. (Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 20 Amps.) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130795

So please upgrade to at least a 500 watt power supply - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139045&Tpk=gs600

I might already have a 500w PSU, but I can't remember. I'll have to check, but I've got the problem of cost... hmm.

More importantly, you have a perceptual problem. No matter what you think your PSU may be rated, it doesn't appear to meet the specs for your video card. Power supplies are one of the most critical components in any computer, and they are the last place you should cut corners. You can't build a solid foundation on sand.

Yes, Mr. Death... I'll play you a game! But not CHESS !!! BAH... FOOEY! My game is...

Okay, I don't have the PSU's box, and if it had been a 300w PSU, I'd have problems by now, no?

I'd have to pry open the PC and check, and then get back to you on it.
