windows xp log in password protected

I recently purchased a second desktop from an auction (as it where as basis), the OS system starts and the log in requests for password ..... I am just confused what should I do ....please advice me ....

Try starting in safe mode so you get a chance to logon as administrator. IF the admin account isn't password protected then you have a way to go into control.panel>users and either remove/change the password on the other account or create a new profile for your use (recommended).

Since any "as is" system may have malware on it or otherwise be dysfunctional...I would start with attempting a clean install of Windows.  If that fails, then it becomes a test of various components for functionality.
