hey everyone, i am getting ready to do a first build and i am a bit confused on drivers. i will be using windows 8.1 as my os, and asus m5a97 r2 as my motherboard. i wanted to get all drivers in order first so i went to the asus website and i see that under 8.1 there is no chipset driver or sata? i cant remember exactly what was under 8.1, but it was only a few. i was told that windows 8 will automatically find the drivers needed, but that doesnt make sense to me as i was always told to get the newest drivers from the manufacturer website right away. someone in another forum told me that i would just use whatever is listed under windows 8 drivers from asus and whats listed under 8.1. for example i am guessing that there was no need for a chipset driver update for 8.1, but for usb 3.0 there was. i am just a bit confused on exactly what to do, any insight would be great..

thank you

That's about right. Just install using the windows disk. Flaws come later.

The only drivers you should download from Asus' website are those for hardware that Windows cannot find a driver for.  For most basic hardware, Windows has generic drivers for.  If a new technology is super-new on the market and Windows wouldn't know what to do with it, that is when you use the manufacturer's website.

thanks djb, so after i install windows, i should check device manager? i was told i should get all drivers from asus, as windows will ONLY give me generic drivers. so bottom line, install windows, then check device manager to see what windows could NOT find, then go to asus?

That's what I do.  Generally, the basic drivers are good enough for the vast majority of consumers.  If you have highly custom or extremely new devices, then you may want to consider going to the Asus website.
