OS Windows 8

Hi, so after some trouble with Norton Internet Security 2013, I've be left wondering if either the program fritzed out on its own, or if I have a virus.

Norton has periodically fritzed out on me in the past during updates, throwing an error but otherwise functioning (I can't remember the exact error. It'd happen every few months). Yesterday, it told me that I hadn't run a scan in a week, which I thought odd as I thought it did so automatically and normally warns me if there's been no activity or updates for more than 4 days. I then tried to run a scan and clicking the scan options failed entirely. I found that worrying to say the least. I restarted my computer and tried Norton again. This time, I found it wouldn't even open and eventually I got the error message '8506,421', which told me to run the Norton removal tool and then the Norton Power Eraser. Having turned to this forum in the past for computer woes, I also grabbed a copy of Rkill based on some of the advice another user had gotten to help me with my tests.

I started by using the Norton removal tool and then the Norton Power Eraser. These ran smoothly and nothing unusual happened. I then downloaded a new copy of Norton. Being a suspicious sort, I booted into Safe Mode, ran Rkill (which found nothing), and then ran Mbam and SuperAntiSpyware, which found nothing. At this point, I felt fairly good that the error was the culmination of the infrequent update errors I had with Norton, possibly from a bad install (it was pre-installed on my brand new laptop I got, I just enabled my old license from my previous machine with it). I rebooted and reinstalled Norton. Everything looked good, although I got one connection error as I hadn't reconnected to my network yet. I then looked through the Advanced section of Norton and saw that Antivirus and Download Intelligence were disabled. That sent up some serious alarm flags for me. I restarted in Safe Mode, ran RKill (which again found nothing). I then decided to run Norton and see what happened. It found nothing. I then restarted again and looked at Norton's Advanced settings. This time Antivirus and Download Intelligence were enabled, which left me scratching my head.

So, I am left in this quandry of not knowing if my computer is safe or not. Everything I've done has turned up nothing. All I want is peace of mind with my computer. I don't know whether to restore from 3 or 10 days ago or to try some other tests. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

G'day schtoltheim,

Please run the following for me ::

Download Security Check by Screen317 from HERE
* Save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
Note: If a security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

* Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
* A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
* If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
* Do not reboot until instructed.
* If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from HERE  to your Desktop.

    Unzip downloaded file.
Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
DO NOT click on the Cleanup button. Simply exit the program.
When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log-xxxxx.txt and system-log.txt

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the finish of the installation, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. <<< most important )
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here in your next Reply

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

Looks quite clean ......however.....Nortons behavior bothers me....(but then again, it always did.....personal opinion only)

Give minitool box a run ...

Download  MiniToolBox MiniToolBox, Save it to your desktop and run it.
Close any Firefox browsers you may have open
Checkmark the following boxes:
•Flush DNS
•Report IE Proxy Settings
•Reset IE Proxy Settings
•Report FF Proxy Settings
•Reset FF Proxy Settings
•List content of Hosts
•List IP configuration
•List last 10 Event Viewer log
•List Installed Programs
•List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
•List Minidump Files

Click Go and copy / paste the result (Result.txt).

Please Download  AdwCleaner
* Close all open programs and internet browsers.
* Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
* Click on the Scan button.
* When the scan has finished click on the
Clean button.
* NOTE : Your computer will be
rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
* Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
* You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner.txt as well.
Once I OK the log, please click the Uninstall button to fully remove all

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

and finally !!.....(this one will take a while....requires great patience )

10 - Please be patient as this will take some time (first time scans are always longer).
11 - When the scan completes, click List Threats
12 - Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
13 - Click the Back button and then Click the Finish button.
NOTE:Sometimes if ESET finds no infections it will not create a log.
If you lose the log it can be found at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
If no infections are found then please tell me -
You can ignore any ESET detection of AdwCleaner...it is a false positive detection.

fed up with Windows antics...??....LINUX IS THE ANSWER....I USE LINUX MINT 18.3  EXCLUSIVELY.

Microsoft gives you Windows, Linux gives you the whole house...

It has been said that time heals all wounds. I don't agree. The wounds remain. Time - the mind, protecting its sanity - covers them with some scar tissue and the pain lessens, but it is never gone. Rose Kennedy

ESET didn't find anything, but I lost the log, so I'll run it again and post it.

The ESET Online Scanner saves a log file after running, which can be examined or sent in to ESET for further analysis. The path to the log file is "C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt" (on 64-bit systems this directory will be "C:\Program Files (x86)\ESET\Esetonlinescanner\log.txt"). You can view this file by navigating to the directory and double-clicking it in Windows Explorer, or by copying and pasting the path specification above (including the quotation marks) into the Start > Run dialog box from the Start Menu on the desktop.

You appear to be clean.

However.....if in the future you decide to swap Norton out for another AV, it may be interesting to note any changes in your PC's behavior.

I note that you have used MBAM in chameleon mode.

It is not possible to say with certainty ....but there is a chance that Norton has played up with MBAM

Personally I use Avira free......but there are quite a few free AV's which are worth supporting...Avast, MSE are among them....

I would update MBAM and run it again.

Please update Adobe Flash  :https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

Be Sure to unselect any foistware/crapware included with the download

Just to clean up.....

Please download TFC, or Temp File CleanerTFC, by Old Timer
Usage Instructions:

Download TFC from the download link above and save the file on your desktop.
Close ALL running applications as TFC will terminate them before attempting to clean up the temporary files.
Double-click on the TFC icon.
When the program opens, click on the Start button. TFC will terminate the Explorer process and all running applications and then begin the process of cleaning out all of your temp folders.
When done, press OK and reboot your computer and finish the cleanup.

There is no need to post a log

Good Luck !
