How can certain websties tell where you live, like the city? Some sites I visit are like find people in so-and-so area. Is this just a common thing, or do I have some tracking device on my comp? THANKS!

Are you referring to IP Trackers? These work by entering the IP of someones computer into a website, this then finds who the IP is owned by. This will tell you your ISP and the address OF YOUR ISP. Don't worry, it's not a tracker on you're comp. All ISPs have to have this information available far as I know. It's most likely the same city because your ISP should have it's servers relatively close to you. (Obviously your not getting internet service from California if you live in N.Y. for expample)

If you're still viewing this topic, try this out yourself.

Head to http://whatismyip.com

Copy Your IP Address then head to

http://www.easywhois.com/?mode=iplookup

Type in your IP and a list of information will pop up on it.

Have fun

It is also used to target local ads to you.

Only your ISP can track it to the MAC number of your specific computer though.
