Newbie question on usb drives

Hey,

      This is probably a dumb question but I'm kinda new at this. I want to download Ubuntu to a usb. It won't use the entire stick

capacity so, can I then load something else, or will one thing wipe out the other. Hope that's clear enough. 

I would appreciate any insight, thanks.

Worth a look http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1290347 but as for me, data storage and bootable drives are separately contained and labeled. :)
