I have been working with nasdac on problems with this PC because it had a virus.  This is a link to the case:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/514605/suspiciouscloud7ep-removed-but-a-few-problems-remain/

We got rid of the virus but I still have the problem with the network adapter not being connected.  He said to open a case in this forum.

The PC is an eMachine EL1310-01.  Windows Vista sp2

We are using a wired connection.

Router is Westell model 6100.

DSl from the phone company.

We are using IE as the browser.  The problem was are having is on occasion when trying to access the internet it gives us the message cannot display the webpage (screen_1).  We click on Diagnose - it gives us screen_2.  We click on reset the network adapter and get screen_3.  Clicking close gets us to the home page.  I have attached these sceen shots to the call.

This problem does not occur when booting up the PC or doing a restart.  I was able to reproduce the problem after Sleeping the computer for about 10 minutes.

Here is the log from running MiniToolBox with all items checked:

Sounds like your computer puts your adapter to sleep and doesn't wake it up.

  1. In device manager, click Network Adapters
  2. Right click your adapter
  3. Click Properties

Look for Power management as a tab maybe and see if there is something about putting it to sleep. If you don't see anything, post back with the name of the adapter and we'll see if we can find some info about it to help you.

Hope this helps thumbup.gif

Try also looking into reinstalling your LAN Network card http://support.gateway.com/us/en/emac/product/default.aspx?modelId=1267 The sleep mode function for desktop is not a robust feature as not all hardware setup/components comes from a single manufacturer. Some manufacturers rarely fix this issue by releasing a BIOS update or driver but it's not common unfortunately.

Thanks for your responses.  It is going to be at least until tomorrow before I can get back to my friend's PC.

jhayz - When I first read LAN Network card, I thought you were telling me to open the PC and reinstall the card.  I just want to make sure you want me to uninstall and reinstall in Device Manager?

If I uninstall in Device Manager will it still be there when I want to do the install?  Also your link sent me to a page of drivers for this PC.  Am I supposed to download one of those?  If so, which one?  And when do I do it in the uninstall/reinstall sequence.

Thanks for your help

Don

Yes but download the necessary drivers for Windows Vista Home Premium (32bit) by pull down arrow menu Operating System.

If nothing changes, disable your antivirus real time protection and firewall as Norton and Mcafee tends to be buggy on some system updates. If possible removing it completely have resolve majority of the connection problems using their Removal Tool. Let us know of the results.

CaveDweller2 I have a NVIDIA nForce 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet card installed.

jhayz - I should have asked for more specific instructions.  I downloaded the driver file.  I deleted the Network Adapter.  I restarted the computer thinking it would just recognize the card and install the driver.  It gave me some messages about how it could not find the driver.  I pointed it to the folder where I had downloaded the file too but it did not recognize that.  I navigated through the files that were downloaded and clicked on a setup.exe.  It appeared to install the driver but when I did a restart it briefly gave me a blue screen as it was shutting down.  When it did the restart it gave me the option to start windows normally which I did.  But it still lets me know I have a device that needs a driver.  When I look in Device Manager it shows Other with the Ethernet card and an exclamation point.

I ran another MiniToolBox hoping that would be helpful.

In the device properties dialog box, click the "Driver" tab, and then click "Update Driver" to start the "Hardware Update Wizard". Follow the instructions to update the driver. If updating the driver does not work, see your hardware documentation for more information.

I deleted the Network Adapter.

You mean uninstalled...?

It gave me some messages about how it could not find the driver.  I pointed it to the folder where I had downloaded the file too but it did not recognize that.  I navigated through the files that were downloaded and clicked on a setup.exe.  It appeared to install the driver but when I did a restart it briefly gave me a blue screen as it was shutting down.

Did windows prompt you to restart when the LAN card was  uninstalled by device manager? :step1: You just need to uninstall the LAN driver (no need to reboot) :step2: and then open the folder containing the exe driver to install. Do not point the location of the driver (stop) but install it directly by running the driver exe setup.

How do I uninstall the LAN driver?

What software or tool will I be in when I open the folder containing the exe to install? Do you mean in Windows Explorer and just double click on the file? Can you give me an example of what name might be the name of the folder and what the exe file might be named.

I need very spcific instructions - almost like click on this, find this, run that etc. If you would please spell it out for me.

Thanks for your help
Don

Just go directly to the saved location of the downloaded driver and double-click the exe setup and it will install.

Jhazy

I tried several things I think one of them was what you described. I navigated to a setup.exe in the zip file that was downloaded. I thought it was doing its work. It opened a large window with NVIDIA in the upper left corner. There was several messages describing what was taking place (I don't remember specifics ) and a progress bar. At the end it wanted to do a restart. That is when I got a blue screen. While I was reading it, it continued with its restart. When it started I got the screen saying it was not a normal shutdown. I let it startup normally. And it was not working after it started.

I think I should probably try the double click on the setup.exe again, and get it to work correctly. Any idea why this failed? I will pay closer attention to the messages in the install and on the blue screen. But what I remember of the blue screen it wasn't making any sense to me. It was all very cryptic as I remember.

Also I don't know for sure I did anything to turn Norton off before I did the install. I will make sure it is disabled before trying again.

Thanks for your help
Don

Did do you download the correct Vista driver as seen from the image? Can you try safemode and install the LAN driver? A bluescreen could mean that its not a compatible driver, corrupt driver ( re download) or a bad LAN card.

Ok thanks I'll check the download file and try in safe mode. I will do a download to my USB drive before I go to my friends.

Thanks
