Error 0x80240022 typically means that the date and time are incorrect on the computer but if you conduct a Google search there are other possible causes and solutions.

Thnks to crptodan, quietman7 & noknojon sugggestions, I have google search for a IT description and solution to my issue of Win Updates and MSE security not updating; see the infoworld link below.

Apparently Microsoft have a known bug in the Windows update Agent 'wuauclt.exe'; which was triggered by the November updates.

http://www.infoworld.com/t/microsoft-windows/windows-xp-update-locks-machines-svchost-redlined-100-fix-it-kb-2879017-230733

The complete solution to my problem was found in Jiver's comment in infoworld's discussion, where he gives the MS forum link:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-windows_update/background-intelligent-transfer-service-is-missing/2afb9676-933b-4b4b-aa26-ada58dd6a014?rtAction=1386442372528

I followed Xircal's 'Most Helpful Reply' precisely - finishing with his manual IE8 November update download - with the result that MSE & MS Update are now updating normally.

I found MSE & Malware Pro seem an effective combo without loading my elderly XP PC too much.
