"What icons!?" I hear you say, ha well there's the thing.

As you'll probably know there's a bunch of icons that turn up when you either right click on a tile in the start screen, or for options in the mail app that's shipped with windows 8. I have not upgraded to 8.1 (I did that last month with disastrous effects so went straight back to 8 - seriously don't tell me to upgrade to 8.1 it ain't gonna happen twice in quick succession). Basically instead of little pictures (icons if you will), I get little empty squares - much like you'd be able to make out of Microsoft Paint with a simple shape tool. It's been bugging me for a while now - I've tried refreshing the system to no known beneficial effect - and am still lumped with empty squares.

I have no idea what the problem is, scanning hasn't revealed anything of significance, but here I am lumped with squares - screenshot provided.

Any ideas? People? Brainiacs? Come on, I know you're out there!

Further to this now little viewed topic I did discover a DISM problem when running sfc scannow via it's log, but with a bit of alternative trawling (seeing as I couldn't find the solution here first) I managed to fix it, however the UI problem still remains.
