I'm not sure if it's malware, it might be something else, but I have no idea what.

I have Windows 7 64 bit and I usually use Firefox (version 25.0.1 right now) and my ISP is Hughesnet, which is satelitte. We only get 30 GB a month (15 anytime, 15 "Bonus Bytes" from 2am to 7am) at stupidly high prices since we can't get anything better out here, so I frequently access the System Control Center at 192.168.0.1 to check the Data Allowance and I can also check this page if I'm having connection problems to see what's causing it.

Last night I went to that page to check my data since it's close to the end of the month and I know I'm running a little low and the page is only partially loading. It has the links at the top and side for the different pages like System Status, System Information, Connectivity Test, etc. but in the center of the page where it should have a meter displaying how much data I have left and some other info there's nothing, it's just blank. And when I click on other pages like System Status or whatever it's the same. It won't show the info, but on some of the pages it'll have an empty box with a gradient where the info's supposed to be. I called the Hughesnet tech support and after them sending signals to my equipment and running tests they say everything looks fine on their end (I'm also able to browse the web fine) and they ask what browser I'm using. When I tell them I'm using Firefox they ask me to try pulling it up with Internet Explorer, so I do and the page loads fine. They recommend I use IE or maybe reinstall Firefox, blah blah, it's not our problem.

So I reset Firefox using the button on the Troubleshooting Information page (you can access by typing about:support in the url bar) which left a folder called Old Firefox Data on my desktop and removed all my addons and set all the settings to stock. I then pulled up the System Control Center and saw that that didn't fix anything. I then tried pulling it up on Chrome and Maxthon (I was trying it out a couple of days ago) and they were doing the same thing as Firefox. So then I went ahead and used the Old Firefox Data folder to restore my addons and settings and went to bed.

This morning I ran the MalwareBytes Anti Malware quick scan, which found a couple of PUPs, one of which was a toolbar or something called Scorpion Saver. I think I accidentally clicked an "I Accept" for it and installed it with Maxthon, which I got from Cnet like a dumbass. It might have something to do with it, but removing it with MBAM didn't fix anything, so idk. I also ran the Avast quick scan, which found nothing. Then I opened Internet Explorer just to look again and it was not working right anymore! It just showed a white page with a white tab and when I tried to type in a url of any kind and hit enter it wouldn't do anything. It showed no indication of even trying to load a page and showed no error messages. When I clicked on the gear in the top right everything in the dropdown was grayed out except for File, Safety, and Compatibility View Settings. I checked Firefox, Chrome, and Maxthon again and they're still working fine except for the problems with the Hughesnet System Control. Somewhere in here I also uninstalled Maxthon since I didn't really care for it, and I ran CCleaner. I also noticed that whenever I exit IE it leaves 3 processes going that I have to end myself in the task manager.

This disturbing behaviour in IE got me really thinking that it may be some kind of malware MBAM and Avast were missing, so I downloaded SUPERAntiSpyware and ran a complete scan. That didn't find anything either. I really don't know where to go from here. I'm usually pretty good at figuring out problems with computers, or at least searching the internet for where other people have had similar problems and seeing what they did, but I've never run into anything that'll cause problems with multiple browsers, and I've never seen Internet Explorer act like that. Hell, I don't even know what to search for. I can't stand IE for every day browsing, but it's a good backup browser. I mostly just want Firefox or Chrome to show the Hughesnet System Control properly, but I want Internet Explorer to work as well, and I'm pretty sure this is all connected anyways. I know everything was fine the day before yesterday, but I don't remember updating or changing anything since then. I think the day before all these problems started was when I was playing with Maxthon, but I don't really feel like that has anything to do with it, unless Scorpion Saver seriously screwed some things up that didn't get fixed when I removed it with MBAM.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.

When I got to the MBAR one and tried to run the mbar.exe it wouldn't do anything. I looked and saw the process in the task manager, so I let it sit for a couple of minutes to see if it would do anything. It didn't, so I ended the process and tried again. Nothing.

So I decided to skip to the next step and download rkill (the first link) and it gave me some kind of error saying:

C:\Users\Jason\Desktop\rkill.exe could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder.
Change the folder properties and try again, or try saving in a different location.

So I tried the other link and it did the same thing. Also, both times it left a broken looking file on my desktop that when I tried to delete it, it said I need admin priveleges (which I have) and wouldn't let me, but then the file would disappear by itself after I clicked cancel.

Anyways, here are the other logs:

I was able to run mbar.exe in safe mode with neworking, and I went ahead and downloaded and ran rkill in safemode while I was at it, but like an idiot I forgot about the "Do not reboot until instructed." and rebooted into normal mode after doing rkill. I can probably run it again in normal mode if you want

After I ran JRT I checked to see if the data allowance thing in the Hughesnet System Control was working and it was. I assumed it was fixed, but went ahead and started ESET anyways. But, just now when I was typing this message to tell you that (about 50 minutes after seeing it working and about 45% into the ESET scan)  I checked Google Chrome to see if it was working, but the problem was still there. I then checked Firefox and now it's not displaying the Data Allowance or anything once again. Basically everything is the same as it was in the OP even though Firefox was ok for that one check. I did notice that one of those programs set my homepage to default so I set it back to https://mail.google.com/mail/?tab=wm could that have anything to do with it? Or could something else have reset since I've pulled up and closed Firefox a few times to check your instructions?

Also, this ESET scan is really slow and I really don't feel like it's going to find anything. I'm an hour in and it's still at 46%, but whatever I guess I'll let it finish. Anyways, here are the AdwCleaner and JRT logs while I'm waiting on that.

Edit: Oh wow, JRT completed 2 hours ago. ESET scan time is at about an hour in, so that means it took ESET about an hour to update and an hour to get to 46%. Guess I've got another hour til this thing finishes and it's probably not gonna find anyhing.

Sorry, feel asleep with it still scanning. It's done now, didn't find anything. What now?

There is nothing malicious there.

As for Hughesnet System Control not working correctly you should definitely press your ISP to solve the issue.

I'm not familiar with it and unless you find someone around here who actually uses it I don't know what else to advice.

Ugh, I guess I'll bother them again about the Firefox problem, but what about the deal with Internet Explorer not working? It won't even try to load a page and when I click the gear almost everything in that dropdown is grayed out.

Here's a screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/4cfsWxb.png

Could anyone help with that? Should I post in a different area, or what?

Edit: Wow, after all that I opened Revo Uninstaller to see if any of those programs you had me run needed to be uninstalled and saw that damn Scorpion Saver crap was still in there, even though MBAM said it had removed it (when I ran itthe first time before making this thread). So I just used Revo to uninstall it and clear it's registry entries and now everything's working again.

Also, even though you didn't find the problem, I think my boot time is about 30 seconds faster after all this, so thanks for that, and thanks for doing what you're doing!

After many many hours of battling with this issue, it was resolved by uninstalling Symantec Endpoint. Had previous issues with Symantec products.
