Must be about 10 years old

On system properties it says

XP SP3
AMD Athlon 1700+ 731Mhz 1Gb RAM

Any antivirus program will just slow it down - 100% CPU

Taken it off and it seems to be just acceptable

Anything else I can do ?

Install Linux... will work ok then.

I've been trying out the new Linux Mint 16. Very Windowsesque and easy to use. Dead simple to install and configure also, much nicer than Windows. Try it first, you don't have to install it. Just boot from install disk and see what it looks like and how it works, then if you like it there is an icon to install it on your machine on the desktop... You may be pleasantly surprised.

I'm with JerryB52, time for a new machine.  Your current machine does not meet the minimum requirements for the 64 bit version of WIndows 7 and if you're running without an anti-virus program you're just asking for trouble.  Add to that the fact that Windows XP is going end of life in April next year and I don't see a whole lot of other options.

Any machine you pick up today will be much better than what you're currently using.  Even the bottom of the line $300 machine will blow yours out of the water.

Yup. I agree too...

Your machine won't even take on the kids these days, let alone stand with the men.
