Here is my other computer problem.  It is on the Windows XP desktop.  Every time I try to defrag my computer, it won't finish.  When I click on "View Report", it doesn't show any files that have fragments.  I try to defrag it again & it still won't finish.  This has been happening to me for the last few months.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Just a thought, but have you got any other applications running while you are trying to defrag ?  If you are using the Windows defrag tool it likes peace and quiet to function. I tried defragging on an XP machine once and it kept re-starting the defrag because there was a screen saver set to run after ten minutes or so. Every ten minutes of desktp inactivity, the screen saver kicked in, and the defrag went back to start !  Setting screen saver to 'None' ended that problem.

I did not run a chkdsk.  It's "chkdsk(space)/f", right?

First - I would run Temp File Cleaner by Old Timer -
Usage Instructions: -

First download TFC from the download link above and save the file on your desktop.

  • Close ALL running applications as TFC will terminate them before attempting to clean up the temporary files.
  • For XP - Double-click on the TFC icon.
  • When the program opens, click on the Start button.  TFC will terminate the Explorer process and all running applications and then begin the process of cleaning out all of your temp folders.
  • When done, press OK to reboot your computer and finish the cleanup.

========================================================================

Next go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click on Disk Cleanup
Wait for the program to load and then see the picture

[attachment=144137:Disk Cleanup.JPG]

======================================================================

Then - Copy / Paste the Code below into "Run Box" and Press ENTER -

Your computer will reboot into a CheckDisk mode after "about 30 seconds" (just wait).

After the CheckDisk is complete (1 to 2 hours on average), it will reboot back to normal mode -
Let it run to completion - Do not force a stop on the scan once it starts, as you may loe data and damage the system.

If you use a laptop, please make sure it is plugged into a reliable power source.

CMD /C ECHO Y|CHKDSK C: /R | SHUTDOWN /R /T 30

Note : This is for XP systems only -

This will run the chkdsk /r mode -

==========================================================================

After that go to Start > Accessories > System Tools and run Defragmenter.

This may not have been running due to too many Temp Files and not running a regular Disk Check.

I run some of these daily, some weekly, and some every few months -

Just my basic take on your problem, "if" you have no other problems involved .......

Chkdsk /r is actually a better command than chkdsk /f.  Generally, it's better to run it before attempting to defrag.

If the chkdsk /r command cannot complete successfully....it's probably time to check the functional status of the drive via a hard drive diagnostic, IMO.

Sorry that I did not reply quickly enough.  I was caught up with other stuff.  I have read that these chkdsks take many hours, even days.  Is it OK if I just posted the Speccy or should I just do the chkdsk?

OK, I finally have an update on this.

First, I did chkdsk /f.  I then went to defrag the computer...& it wouldn't finish defragging.

Next, I did chkdsk /r.  I then went to defrag the computer...& it wouldn't finish defragging.

So, I decided to do the Speccy & here are the results:

RAM : 512MB DDR -
Half a Gig of RAM will make the system feel a lot slower than most other computers you will use.

Details from M/soft to "run the system" are RAM : 128 MB is recommended = 384 MB Maximum
Add active Antivirus (required) = Minimum about 5 MB for a basic free system
You are working on a maximum third of a Gig of RAM now -

How many programs etc. etc. etc. and you have a quarter of a Gig at the most -

I would try Free Auslogics Defrag Program (I am not advertising) but I use it on XP and Windows 7, and it runs a lot quicker. but it will not Defrag fully -
I always use M/soft Defrag after this, and I use this weekly.

Download and run these. but Right Click > Delete after you post the report -

First -

Download Security Check by Screen317 from HERE
* Save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
Note: If any security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Next -

Download MiniToolBox, Save it to your desktop to run it.
Close any Firefox browsers you may have open
Checkmark the following boxes:
• Flush DNS
• Report IE Proxy Settings
• Reset IE Proxy Settings
• Report FF Proxy Settings
• Reset FF Proxy Settings
• List content of Hosts
• List IP configuration
• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs
• List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
• List Minidump Files
 Click Go and copy / paste the result (Result.txt).

Next - Keep this one -

Download TFC (Temp File Cleaner) by Old Timer to your desktop
 • Close any open windows.
• Double click the TFC icon to run the program
• TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
• Click the Start button to begin the process.

• Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
• The program should not take long to finish it's job
• Once its finished it may automatically reboot your machine,
• if it doesn't, please manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

Thank You -

Noknojon, can you clarify a couple of things for me please:

1.  Should I run the 2 defrag programs first, then do the Security Check, MiniToolBox, & Temp File Cleaner?

2.  Which programs are you talking about when you say right click & delete after I post the reports?
