I believe I am experiencing a memory leak of some form...at least that's the closest I can come to a description of the issue.

My physical memory usage goes up...way up...sometimes close to the full 8GB I have installed. When this happens I experience sluggishness and problems opening or closing windows.

I am not a power user...I am not running any memory intensive applications, that I know of. Right now I have 3 tabs open in Internet Explorer 10 and my usage is at 6.81GB of physical memory.

When I start my computer it doesn't use more than about 2GB but over time the usage climbs. My computer has been up for nearly 5 days now and the only application that I have personally used in that time is Internet Explorer.

I have BitDefender running. I have MalwareBytes running. Neither application is actively scanning as I write this. Neither program indicates infection.

I've read various complaints on the web and followed some of the advice given to others.

I ran Disk Cleanup recently...say the last 2 weeks...and it currently tells me I can only gain 119MB if I run it.

I checked Disk Defrag...I am 0% fragmented on my Raid-0 system and most of my 1.7TB of disk space is free.

I disabled startup programs using MSConfig ages ago.

Nothing I am running should account for 6.81GB of memory usage and sluggishness.

I pasted some screenshots together of my Performance, Processes, and the Services related to the highest memory usage (see attached image).

I could really use some advice to keep this from continuing.

You are going to have to install and run SysInternals Process Explorer from Microsoft.com, and find out what sub process of svchost is eating up your RAM.  Svchost is known to be malware using that filename.  Most likely you are infected, so I suggest you follow the cleanup steps to a T, to make sure your machine is clean first.

Read this post first http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/182397/am-i-infected-what-do-i-do-how-do-i-get-help-who-is-helping-me/  Then follow the instructions in this http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=139681

Please...do NOT follow the instructions provided another forum...in conjunction with the way in which that forum pursues malware problems.  That will just clutter your topic in Am I Infected and it's impossible to anticipate just what a person trying to assist you there...will find helpful.

I am moving this post to the BC Am I Infected forum, where someone will assist you.  They will ask you to provide any logs or other information they deem necessary.  Provide such when requested.

Thanks :).

Louis

I really appreciate the responses, thank you.

No worries, I have worked with help from BC before and I like the help I receive here, so I wasn't planning on attempting malware tips from another site.

I await further responses/instructions.

I ran the scans for each program you listed. The results are attached.

ESET Online Scanner found no threats but I pasted the scan info into a notepad file just for record.

During the Junkware Removal Tool scan I did disable both BitDefender and MalwareBytes.

I looked for a way to attach these files without having to post the entire content but there doesn't seem to be an attachment uploader in this section of the forum that I can see.

I am attaching, in order, the text from Mini Toolbox, TDSSKiller, ADWCleaner, JunkwareRemovalTool, and ESET Online Scanner.

Next lets see if there is a rootkit...
Empty your temp folders using TFC (Temporary File Cleaner)
  • Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop.
    alternate download link
  • Save any unsaved work. (TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!)
  • Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. (If you are using Vista, right-click on the file and choose "Run As Administrator".)
  • Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway allowing Windows to load normally (not into Safe Mode) to ensure a complete clean.
Please download aswMBR ( 4.5MB ) to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe icon, and click Run.
  • When asked if you'd like to "download the latest Avast! virus definitions", click Yes.
  • Click the Scan button to start the scan.
  • On completion of the scan, click the save log button, save it to your desktop, then copy and paste it in your next reply.

I see no infections.  We can either move to the Malware removal for a deeper look or Post in the WIn7 forum now that you are clean and have them look at other items.

I didn't think I had malware since I never really found any of the classic symptoms of infection. I just seem to have memory usage slowly climbing over the course of several days until I lose functionality.

Unless you feel malware removal is warranted I would suggest heading back to the Win7 forum. I defer to your good judgement.

Yes I concur that going back to WIN 7 would be better and faster.
