For roughly 10 million UK internet users, this is a threat that just came a lot closer to home. On the 15th November, the National Cyber Crime Unit, a division of the UK Crime agency, issued an urgent warning to alert citizens to the threats caused by a mass spamming event thought to be containing the Cryptolocker malware.
CryptoLocker is disguised in email attachments, apparently related to “legitimate” correspondence from reputable companies such as banks and internet providers or even to UPS or FedEx tracking numbers. Once opened, it is already too late and the data will have been encrypted with little chance of it ever being returned.
