Hell all. I stumbled across your site yesterday when trying to find a fix for a pesky program that seems like it's everyone's new favorite...Spy Falcon, . Sunday eve, I was trying to install an updated version of Norton SW and Personal Firewall and in the process, Spy Falcon appeared and started reocking havoc on my system. At any rate, I found the smitrem and the registry fixes, went through the safemode deal and everything seems to be deleted. I've run Adware, SpyBot SD, downloaded and ran Avast with a system boot scan, as well as Spyware Blaster and MS Defender Beta 2. Additionally, I've run Hijack This to log.

Every time I boot up, I get an error message from Norton (as it tries to install other items I believe since it has a wininstaller box that pops up) that says "Norton AntiVirus 2006 does not support the Repair feature, uninstall and reinstall." Additionally, I get another error message that says that NSCSRVCE.exe has "Failed to start because ccL30.dll was not found..."

I have an idea that I should probably uninstall all my norton sw and firewall items, run some free tools, clean everything up and then reinstall that? At any rate, this is not the main reason behind my post (log file to come).

Last thing, from what I've noticed...I do believe that I have not found the file that hijacks IE's homepage as it still is moving to some fake spyware page. If I am not mistaken, as Norton did catch this file "Dcomcfg.exe" as a possible culprit. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to delete it or find any valid and reliable info on it from other boards. I'm done with IE too as I'm writing this post from FireFox.

So I plead for HELP! Thanks to anyone that can lend a hand and here's the log.

Thanks Sam. I haven't had time to get back to this until this morning (to check) and I'll be working most of tomorrow on this project. Will be in touch!

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
______________________________

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:
  • Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.
______________________________

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido, and run a full scan.
  • Click on Scanner
  • Click on Settings
    • Under How to scan all boxes should be checked
    • Under Unwanted Software all boxes should be checked
    • Under What to scan select Scan every file
    • Click on Ok
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says Perform action on all infections and put a checkmark in the box next to Create encrypted backup, then choose clean and click Ok.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save Report.
  • Click Save Report button
  • Save the report to your Desktop
Close Ewido and Reboot in Normal Mode.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

I am still having Norton error messages, but the machine as a whole seems to be running better lately. I'm still continplating once you and I are finished blowing norton out and then reinstalling it. Other suggestions? Thanks again for the help and sorry I've been slow in dealing with this and getting back to you.

Your log looks pretty good, but there is a little cleaning up we should do. But before we do that you will need to disable Spybot's Teatimer and SpywareGuard, otherwise they will block the registry fix by Hijackthis.

Right click the SpywareGuard icon in the System Tray at the bottom-right corner of the screen and open the program.
Then go to Menu, File, Exit.
Then confirm the program is closed.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
===========

Now we can make the fixes with Hijackthis.
Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of the lines listed below. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Reboot and post one last hijackthis log for me to review.

You've the right idea with Norton. Completely uninstall it, make sure you reboot, and then reinstall it. Norton is notorious for being very difficult to uninstall, so if you have problems let me know and we'll get serious with it.

I'm gonna start tackling the Norton some point this weekend, I'll keep ya posted. I also keep getting a "End Program" when I shut down. The program appears to be called ccApp? Any thoughts?

The error message from ccapp.exe is part of Norton. Once you uninstall and reinstall Norton that should be resolved.

What media are you trying to view that gives you error?

Yes I went to Ohio St years ago and remain a loyal fan. I'd gladly take you up on that beer anytime other than the 3rd week in November.

I actualy went to Delaware, but of course our program has some ties to the Michigan program, so it kinda follows I suppose.

As far as the media, just imbeded sound or video. I tried to run NASCAR trackpass last night and it wouldn't let me get any driver audio. I've had issues view things on www.streetfire.net as well. I'm guessing it might be WMV or WMA files that are imbeded in pages?

Are you having the same problem with both Firefox and IE?

Is it a recent problem, or have you had it for a while?

The image I posted is the problem I get with FireFox. The IE problem displays the "red X".

It's a recent problem.

I am going to do the Notron gig this weekend (been lazy and busy, I know not an excuse).

I'll keep you posted on the Norton. I have the one thread book marked about their uninstall program.
