Hello friends!

Every time I open Firefox (or IE) it works fine initially, but after a few minutes on the web the entire computer slows way down. I have been working with Windows Task Manager open and I see it is always the web browser maxing out the CPU.

Closing the browser, waiting and then reopening it, results in the same issue. So does restarting. I do like to watch a lot of video blogs, could this be filling up memory somewhere?

Here's my current HijackThis log. Please help if you can. Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forum. Sorry for the wait, if you still need help, I do not see any malware in this log. I do however see two antivirus programs running at the same time and this is not a good thing. See this:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.n...000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
The conflictions caused by this make it impossible to troubleshoot other issues. I suggest you uninstall one, update and scan with the other.

If that does not fix your problem, you have ewido onboard, open the program and choose update, allow time for it to finish. Now click scanner then complete system scan. Allow ewido to remove anything it locates unless you know it is not bad. Save that scan report, I must see it.

Post the ewido scan results and a new HJT log along with any comments you think will help.

Thanks...pskelley

Hi pskelly,

Thank you for the response!
Here's what I did:

1) uninstalled the Norton anitvirus
2) installed ZoneAlarm firewall (the above removed the Norton one)
3) updated and ran ewido - see results below

Everything ran MUCH faster for a while. Then the CPU started maxing out again. I just ran Ewido on the folders where it found something before, but there is nothing now.

4) just ran hijack this - see log below - computer is currently running slow again

Any ideas?

Thanks again!

Thanks for returning your information. Let me first say that your HJT log appears to be clean of malware.

Good chance it is something else other than malware causing the problem. Have you looked in your Task Manager?
Right click a blank spot on the taskbar and click Task Manager. Under the Processes tab look to see what process is using all of the CPU when you get the spike. It may be best for you to post here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/56/windows-xp-home-and-professional/ as they will be better able to help with a WinXp issues, tell then you were checked here and are clean of malware, or link them to this topic.
I would like to look at one area, please do this:

add/remove in the control panel.
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Thanks...Phil

Thanks!

I've been watching the task manager. Usually it starts with Firefox maxing out, but then even after I close Firefox the computer continues to run slowly. Sometimes I have trouble starting up as well. Will post the detials at the appropriate forum.

Below is the uninstall log. Let me know if you see anything.

Thanks again!

Thanks for posting the Add Remove list. Nothing that is bad malware jumps out at me.

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3.0_02
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05
You may to review this information: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=2559

LimeWire 4.10.9
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/pest/Pe...px?id=453088059
http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/
Limewire (The most current version of Limewire is reported to include spyware. LimeWire 4.9.28 is clean. Older and newer version may not be.)

Here are some ideas that may help the overall performance.

Since the log appears clean of malware, Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm

http://cybercoyote.org/security/not-admin.shtml

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
