Where are you getting the information that your games will not work with Windows 8?  If they truthfully will not work with 8, what makes you think that 8.1 will make them work?

Mouse lag issue has already been addressed by Microsoft and there is a patch available for that...  And, i would suggest you the following to decide on Windows 8.1:

1- Check if compatible drivers for all of your devices are available or not

2 - Check if the games you play are officially announced to be compatible on Windows 8.1

If yes, then do update to Windows 8.1 . And on a personal note, with Direct X 11.2, gaming is  joyful on Windows 8.1

I updated Windows 8 to 8.1 for free yesterday and things don't work the same and there is no uninstall most settings are knocked up. I've been fed up with Windows 8 64bit for 6 months as my old software doesn't work. I have to workout how to get it boot boot up to the Windows 7 DVD so I can go back to a better OS. Windows 7 uses NTFS partition Windows 8 uses a GPT partition so it will have to be formatted. I've disabled secure boot in the BIOS but there is no Legacy/CSM boot option or boot device to read the DVD on startup.

Stick with Windows 7 if I were you.

Do not know where you are getting that info.  It is not as wide spread as people are making the problems to be.  These are issues with older hardware, that people are having problems with 8.x on.

If your computer came with Windows 7, it will have issues if it is older hardware, that was not fully certified for Windows 8.  I had issues on my old Acer Netbook that I gave my daughter, so loaded Windows 7 back on it.

There is no need to update to Windows 8.x on your computer, just because it is out there.  Windows 7 is fine to still use.
