I am running windows 7 on my laptop and Windows update is having trouble installing 6 important and 6 optional updates.

Whenever the  system attepts to update it downloads and installs the updates and then requests a shutdown. When the shutdown proceeds it usually updates 1, then tries the 2nd and then immediately shuts down. I do not know if this is virus behavior or whether it's just abnormal windows behavior.

Is there a way to push updates manually?

go into the control panel and click on windows updates and see what is there unless you have done this I don't know you can see what is there and the dates the updates came in.  also might be some form of mal ware to.   but I would do the checking on the updates if this is any help. hopefully some one here can chime in and add some info as well.
