Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts. Afterwards, HijackThis will launch.

Finally, please post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt, along with a new HijackThis log into this topic.
Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

You only posted the top half of your hijackthis log.

Download KillBox and unzip it to your desktop.

Open Killbox and select the Delete on reboot option.
Copy and paste the following file to the field labeled "Full path of file to delete"

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DMPTN.EXE

Press the Delete button (the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it).
A first dialog box will ask if you want to delete the file on reboot, press the YES button.
A second dialog box will ask you if you want to REBOOT now. Press the YES button.

Your computer will reboot.

Please post a new hijackthis log.

Hi,

Have done as requested, but Killbox did not find C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmptn.exe.

It's possible that Adaware had already disabled it as it had been showing up as attempting to change the registry and I'd chosen to block it. The last few times I truned on my computer it did anot attempt to change my registry.

I ran HijackThis and it still showed up in the log, so I scanned with Adaware and it also found an entry, which I deleted using HijackThis. On reboot and rescan with HijackThis and Adaware, dmtpn was not found.

I include logs from Killbox prior to removing dmtpn with HijackThis and a post removal HijackThis log (all of it this time!)

I no longer seem to be getting hijacked from a google search results page and pages do load faster, so that's a big plus.

Thankyou.

Killbox log.

That file may have changed names, so we'll run another check for it and any others.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{7C406C95-6F55-43D1-85DF-51C574CE3D3D}: NameServer = 85.255.114.75,85.255.112.71
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{7F0DEB2B-C0FD-4574-9FF1-732CA824714E}: NameServer = 85.255.114.75 85.255.112.71
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{A45D56CA-1804-4C84-ABB4-685D76610A6E}: NameServer = 85.255.114.75,85.255.112.71
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{D56C42CC-02ED-42E8-9E27-58597BED0105}: NameServer = 85.255.114.75,85.255.112.71

Now lets check some settings on your system.
  • Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections
  • Then right click on your Default Connection
    • Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
  • Left click on Properties
  • Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
  • Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
  • Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

Reboot your computer.

Download and save backlight to your desktop. Doubleclick blbeta.exe, accept the agreement, leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked, click scan > next.

You'll see a list of all the items it found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (where xxxxxxx represents numbers). The application finds both bad files and legitimate ones such as "wbemtest.exe", so don't choose the rename option yet! Copy and paste the log it generated in your next reply.

Also post a new hijackthis log.

Hi,

I've done as requested. There was data manually configured in the DNS preferences - it's now gone. The blacklight version did not have an option to scan through Windows Explorer, so I assume it did so automatically?

Here are the logs. You'll notice that O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{7F0DEB2B-C0FD-4574-9FF1-732CA824714E}: NameServer = 202.55.145.2 202.55.145.10 has reapeared (It was definitely removed - I killed it twice).

The 017 line itself is not malicious, as long as the IP address is correct. The IP that shows there now is different than the one that infected your computer. I'm assuming that is now your ISP. Here's the info I get on it.

Hi,

The IP address is my isp, so that's good.

I was able to surf last night without being hijacked at all, instead of nearly two out of three attempts. I've also got much more security in an effort to prevent it happening again.

Thanks very much

At this stage I don't need anything more.

Ta.

Sounds good!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

:flowers:
