Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

Machine locks up after it has been in sleep mode(hibernation)? The past 3 days I find my machine locked up in the mornings or after I have been away for a few hours. Screen appears normal but mouse is frozen and nothing works. Restart fixes it each time.

AVG Free 2013 finds nothing

Malwarebytes finds nothing

I know it's time for a new system but need to wait a but still.

Thanks,

Larry

Usually when a computer is infected with malware there will be indications (signs of infection) something is wrong.

Power options like hibernation, sleep and standby have been known to cause a variety of issues after a computer wakes up or attempts to return to normal usage. For that reason, I do not use them. In your case, you may just want to temporarily turn them off as a troubleshooting method to see if you encounter the same issue afterwards.Troubleshooting Hibernation, Standby issues:

OK,

I checked a few things and it shows that Hibernation is selected as "NEVER" so it must just be in standby when I'm away for a while. I will read through the items you posted and see if I can figure out what is happening. I notice that my curser appears slower at times so hopefully I'm not infected.

Thanks,

Larry

We can always run security scans but sometimes its easier to just do things by process of elimination.

OK changed standby from 25 minutes to NEVER. It froze 2 more times today. Seems odd since I have been using standby for 9 years now. I will report back if the freezes stop. What do we think changed to create this problem?

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 is an old operating system and as you say...you've had it for nine years. Odd behavior and performance issues are not uncommon with older computers and some are unexplainable. I have an old XP system myself with some quirks I have not been able to figure out. I suppose I could reformat and do a clean install but support ends April 8, 2014 so its not going to be used much after that.

That PC cleaner plus looks interesting. Should I download that and run it?

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons.
Please read: Why you should not use Registry Cleaners and Optimization Tools

Be sure to read Microsoft's support policy for the use of registry cleaning utilities in that topic...Microsoft does not support the use of registry cleaners.

The problem appears to be fixed after changing "Stand By" setting from 20 mins to "Never". Time to update to a Windows 8 machine. Is their a place that has some good recommendations for a new computer.

Thanks for your excellent help!

Larry

You're welcome. I thought doing that would do the trick...mine is set the same way since I never use those options.

These are sites I always check for deals on computers.
TigerDirect.com
Overstock.com
Amazon.com

The last three I purchased were HP's from TigerDirect. My wife, daughter and myself all went with Windows 7 instead of Windows 8 as none of us were thrilled with the changes Microsoft made. Many others felt the same...hence the release of 8.1 to address some of those concerns.
