I keep getting 72 entries of 'MidAddle' reappear in Registry despite Ewido quarantining or deleting them.
I did a HijackThis scan as shown below. Can anyone help please?

I have scanned with AVG, Spybot, Adaware, A-squared and Windows Defender, as well as Ewido; only Ewido picked up Midaddle by the way. Nothing else came up (not even tracking cookies).
Thanks

Hi, greenhatch.

Not much in your hijackthis log.
Scan with hijackthis and checkmark this line:

O16 - DPF: {15AD6789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windupdates.com/cab/CDT/ie/bridge-c18.cab

Close all browsers and open windows, except hijackthis, and click fix checked.

Scan with ewido and post the report.
It should be located at located at C:\Program Files\ewido\security suite\Reports.

Restart your system after the ewido scan, then scan with hijackthis and post the new log.

Hey. I'm not sure I got the sequence right. But I did the HJT scan, ticked that item you suggested, ran Ewido registry scan, found the 72 items again, quarantined the little buggers. I then rebooted, ran full Ewido scan (report below), the same MidAddle (all 72 entries!) still there (this time I didn't quarantine) and then did another HJT (log below).
What now? Am I stuck with it?
Cheers

I have seen those type of registry keys flagged before. I believe them to be a false positive.
You can see the same thing in this thread at geeks to go forum.

The CLSID number in the registry key is valid and the rest of the key describes your integrated audio on your laptop.
I had a very similar thread back in December that I reported to Ewido as a false positive.
They said that they would check into it, but did not respond back after that.

The Official ewido Support Forum is at Wilders Security forums. I will post there and we'll see what happens.

In the mean time, could you open ewido and check for updates then scan again.
Lets make sure that it is still flagging the same entries. No need to post the report again and I would not ask ewido to take any action, just let me know what the results are.

Edit: Posted at Wilders ewido support forum.

I scanned again with Ewido and got the same 'detections'. Ok, thanks for your time; I will accept it as false positives.

Ok, thanks for your time; I will accept it as false positives.

While I do think that it's a false positive, it really hasn't been confirmed.
If you are willing, we can leave this thread open and watch for any change on your system.
You did not have any sign of MidAddle in your first post, other than the ewido scan.

Maybe you could watch for any signs of it returning and post back if that happens.
Signs of the infection could be a change in homepage, hijacked search results and ads inserted into results.
In hijackthis a BHO line may be added with this CLSID (highlighted), the file name is random.

O2 - BHO: Search Help - {E8EAEB34-F7B5-4C55-87FF-720FAF53D841} - C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\qzbf.dll

On more move at this time, would be an online scan to double check for any MidAddle related files.
A scan might also show some unrelated files to remove.

Run an Online Scan at Panda's Active Scan
At Panda's site, click scan your pc, then check now.
Fill in the requested information and click Scan Now!
Allow the active-x to install, then select "my computer" to scan.
When finished scanning, click see report then save the report to your desktop.
Post the contents of Activescan.txt in your next reply.
No need to purchase the software, we can use the list to manually remove bad files found.

I read your thread over at Wilders Ewido section. It'll be interesting how/if the Ewido guys respond. And I'll be happy to report back any strange goings-on on my machine ( it's an HP Pavilion laptop by the way). In the meantime I did the Panda Active online scan and below is the report: interesting they detected an apparent adware in registry, and some apparent cookies, which neither Ewido nor Adaware seemed fit to report.

That's a good reason to run several different scans, they tend to find different problems.
I still consider ewido to be a very good program, even with the apparant false postive.
I use and recommend it probably more than any other scanner.

The adware/wupd in the registry is an orphaned registry key, not really doing any harm.

Have you considered running Firefox as your browser?
I like the way it handles cookies. I have all cookies blocked, then allow cookies by exception only.
An extension callled cookie button makes it easy to add sites to the allow list.
Firefox is part of my suggested programs to increase your system security.
You already have an anti-virus and a malware scanners, so I will suggest some programs with different types of protection.

Visit microsoft update and click the express button to get high-priority updates.

The xp firewall only blocks incoming connections which will allow any program or trojan on your system to connect without permission.
Most third party firewalls block incoming and outgoing unless you permit it.
Zone Alarm, Outpost Firewall and Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall have free versions for personal use.

Considerer using the Firefox web browser.
It's more secure than Internet explorer, blocking almost all known browser hijackers.
Firefox has faster browsing, improved popup blocking, tabbed browsing and many other features.

SpywareBlaster - Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.

IE-SPYAD adds a long list of sites associated with known advertisers, marketers, and crapware pushers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer.
Using IE-Spyad to enhance your privacy and security

Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File

SpywareBlaster, IE-SPYAD and the Hosts file do not run in the background, just check for updates every few weeks.
Open spywareblaster and click check for updates then enable all protection.
Updates for IE-SPYAD and MVPS HOSTS are announced in the software forum at SpywareInfo.

Hi, greenhatch.
ewido has requested a copy of the registry key that it flags as MidAddle.
I have attached a batch file to this post that should export the key as a text file.
Download the attachment, findkey.bat, to your desktop.
Double click to run it and a notepad text file should open which you can close.
A copy of key.txt will be placed on your desktop.

Next, go to the ewido site at http://www.ewido.net/en/malware/
Click the browse button, browse to and choose key.txt on your desktop.
In the description box, paste in the address of this thread then click submit.

ewido did fix the false positive that I reported in December, so maybe we can get this one sorted out too.
