Very recently bought a new Hard Drive, since my last one took a dive. Bought and installed Windows 7 on it, was smooth for about a month. Now, I'm having this issue where my computer decides to freeze up randomly. I can run computer games consistently with no issue, but when I'm browsing the internet in Firefox, or on Skype, it'll just freeze up completely. It's even frozen up while idling overnight. I've only had one or two instances where I could wait it out and it would stop. More often than not, I'm performing a hard restart. I did do a search, and found another thread here with the same issue:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/502505/computers-freezing-occasionally/?hl=%2Bcomputer+%2Bfreezes+%2Brandomly+%2Bfor+%2Breason

I've started the new topic because I was worried that one was marked as "resolved".

Here are the logs as requested in the previously mentioned post:

I'm noticing that my Mobo is at 102 degrees Celcius... Maybe it's an overheating issue?

Hmmm...normally there is a distinct correlation between reported temperatures for the CPU and the motherboard, with them being approximately plus/or/minus 5 degrees apart.  If there is a greater variance, it's usually the CPU which will be higher and that may be an indication of CPU heatsink/fan problems.

Your situation is very different, with your motherboard reflecing a temperature extremely higher than that of the CPU.  Someone with more knowledge of hardware will have to interpret that for you and suggest what might be the situation.  CPU temps are 40 Celsius while motherboard reflects 105 Celsius.

Your board is a stock HP motherboard, what specific system do you have?

Moved to Internal Hardware forum.

Yeah it's actually becoming immediately doubtful that the temperature is the issue. As I said, I can run games with no issue, but I just tried to open a link in Firefox and everything locked up again.

I've got the HP Pavilion Elite m9515y PC  (if thats what you were looking for). Maybe I've got some bad RAM I need to replace?

As a test, Go to this page and look at the Motherboard Picture.

Be very careful they could be hot enough to burn Your finger. With the Computer running feel the Silver heatsink between the CPU and the PCI express slot and the Brown one by the SATA slots.

After the computer has been running for a while are they to hot to touch?

I have seen problems caused by one of them running too hot. Be careful not to shift them as that could cause damage to the heat sink compound.

Good Luck

Roger

Ow, yeah, I'm pretty sure I felt it yesterday trying to figure out whether it was overheating or not. It is hot to the touch.

Hi,

If You can, take a look and see if there are any bad capacitors. Take a look at http://www.badcaps.net/ for more details. Look on the right side of the page part way down. You can click the images to make them bigger. Look for Bulging tops, Leaking at the top or bottom, Capacitor case pushed up, etc.

If none try setting a fan blowing onto the motherboard  and see if that does two things. Cools the heat sinks to the touch and eliminates the freezing.

I had a Slimline HP with a similar motherboard that had both problems. I replaced the bad capacitors and Wire tied a small fan to the heat sink to keep it cool. That allowed me to eke out some longer use of it.

It could also be Software too.

Good Luck

Roger

The Caps really all look alright. I've tried the ghetto fix with a window fan for a graphics card a while back. could always give that another go.

thanks

Alright so I'm certain it's not overheating, now. Just went to use my PC after it was left alone all night, and it froze up again. Heat sink was barely warm to the touch this time. I mentioned it before, but I don't believe you said - is it possible that some of my RAM is bad/corrupt?

Pretty positive I figured out the issue here. It was Firefox the whole time. I turned off my Hardware Acceleration, and haven't had any issues since. If anyone else is having a similar problem:

Firefox tab --> Options --> Advanced Tab --> Uncheck 'Use hardware acceleration when available'

Hi, I'm glad that Your computer is not freezing anymore.

And thank You for reporting back the solution.
