I was having some problems with a new printer i bought so i spoke to the helpline and they accessed my computer remotely. I am not entirely sure what they did, I thing he went in to MSconfig and enabled all the programs in the start up list. By the end of it the printer would still not work and the computer was running really slow. The loading timer is often showing and now the system restore won't work, the restore points are still there but when i try do the restore it is unable to do it. Also the windows add or remove programs doesn't work. I have a new printer now and it is working fine but i am just wondering why the system restore won't work. I have gone through the startup list and disabled uneccessary programs

Did you ask...the person who "helped" you...just what was done and why?

Did you inform her/him of your subsequent appearance of your SR problem?

It wasn't actually me who called the helpline. They didnt ask what was done amd I've not spoken to the helpline again as I am reluctant to as they obviously don't know what they are doing

Are you sure the helpline was actually legit and provided by the printer manufacturer? There are a lot of fake/unethical support sites out there and there's a good possibility whooever was looking for support was taken in by one of those. What I would do if I were you is to run a few of the free malware removal tools like Malwarebytes and Adwcleaner, downloads can be found on this site. Based on what they find, and if you still can't access add/remove programs or turn on system restore, start a malware removal thread in the proper forum.

SAS and Malwarebytes are fine applications...but...if they were effective in removing all types/forms of malware, there would not be a need for all the special tools and experience in using those tools...that exists today.

Do you have any other symptoms of malware...beside the inability to use System Restore?  What other anomalies have you experienced or which are documented via error messages or logs such as Event Viewer?

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

List last 10 Event Viewer log

  List Installed Programs

List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 , taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

The only other symptoms that I have is that the loading symbol next to the mouse pointer is always there and also when i open my computer, it takes along time to show the different drives.

I have pasted the results from MiniToolBox. I ran speccy, but it doesn't seem to show any information, it just says class not recognised. I have pasted the link

This "class not registered" message...seems to point to Windows file corruption, with no one having a definitieve "this is what it means" or "this is how you overcome it".

Lots of easy "suggestions" such as run sfc /scannow, repair your install, do a clean install.

Since any number of unknown changes have been made by someone and/or something...I'd have to suggest a clean install.  The possiblllities (file system corruption, Windows corruption, malware, hardware) are just too common to suggest anything else, IMO.

Running a system with 1GB of RAM...won't do wonders for your patience/satisfaction.

thanks but i am a bit unsure what this means

Every so often a Windows installation becomes corrupt. In some cases this can be fixed by running System File Checker but this normally requires the orginal build cd.

The workout around for this to change the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Setup\SourcePath

sfc /scannow should now run without the cd.

In some cases you may need the i386 folder on the C: drive and also modify the ServicePackSourcePath key.

If possible could you explain what i need to do. Thanks

Ignore that and try running the command.

OK, thanks :).

I've been looking for a simpler explanation...take a look at http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?topic=3103.0 and see if you can follow it.

Another alternative to using the sfc /scannow command...which I believe may work...is to download SP3 from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24 and save it to your desktop.  Then reinstall SP3 from your desktop.
